Purc’s legacy will live on forever. We sing so many of his arrangements to this very day. We share stories of his reverence and irreverence. We quote his wit and wisdom. And, as any good emcee does on occasion, I may have stolen one or two of his jokes. His musical creativity has made a lasting impact on hundreds of Barbershop Singers from Ridgewood to the Jersey Shore and north to Westchester. We will not say “Farewell” to our dear friend, only “Till We Meet Again.” May comfort be found in your loving circle of family and friends. On behalf of The Ridgewood Cavaliers of Harmony, past and present, I offer our sincere sympathy.

It is with a heavy heart that I found out this news two months too late. I had the great honor of being a student of Herr Stybr for three years, when he taught German at my local High School in Middletown, New Jersey. Of all my teachers, he is the one I remember most fondly. I regret losing touch with him after he moved to California.

I will always miss his wit, humor, warmth, and compassion. He was truly one of the most interesting human beings I’ve ever met, and he would regale us with stories and anecdotes that he picked up from his extensive travels around the world.

My family, particularly my late father, were particularly indebted to Mr. and Mrs. Stybr for translating some old letters we had from our ancestors that were written in a Low German script around the turn of the 20th century. We shall always remember him with fondness and gratitude.

On behalf of the Sievers family, and I’m sure all of Herr Stybr’s former students here in New Jersey, I offer our heartfelt condolences.

  3. I was SO sad to hear about this today. Herr Stybr was one of my absolute favorite teachers. He was my German teacher for four years at Middletown HS North in Middletown, NJ. He was more than a teacher…he encouraged us, he inspired us, he was a mentor. I am still in shock from this news and I feel so terrible for having lost touch with him soon after he moved to California. I will never forget him. Thoughts and prayers with Frau Stybr. I can’t even begin to express my condolences for her. They were such a great couple.
