Obituary

Marguerite (Peggy) Barrett, 83, of Mission Viejo, died suddenly on Saturday, June 28. Peggy was born in Ossining, New York, to Martin and Vendla Tracey and grew up in that Westchester County town, graduating from Ossining High School and later marrying John D. Barrett, to whom she was married for 65 years. Peggy and John and their family moved to California in 1964 and, after stops that included Doylestown, PA; London; Halifax, Nova Scotia; St. John’s, Newfoundland; Tokyo; Singapore; and, finally, Houston related to John’s work with Mobil, they settled in Mission Viejo in 1992.

For most of their time in Mission Viejo, Peggy and John have volunteered at Mission Hospital, and Peggy was a past President of the Auxiliary of Mission Hospital. In addition, Peggy was active in Questers and similar organizations involving antiquing, an area in which she developed considerable expertise. Shortly before moving to California, Peggy sewed banners for the Vatican Pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, where Michelangelo’s Pietà was displayed. Even after retiring to Mission Viejo, John and Peggy continued to travel around the country and around the world. As much as John and Peggy loved to travel, nothing rivalled their devotion to their family.

In addition to her husband, of Mission Viejo, Peggy leaves four sons, John D. Jr. (Barbi) of Palos Verdes, Peter (Katherine) of Washington, D.C., Douglas (Jan) of Mission Viejo, and Robert (Jude) of Shanghai, China; two daughters, Eileen of Redondo Beach and Jacqueline of Santa Maria; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

There will be a Vigil and Rosary on Wednesday, July 2, at 7:00 pm and a funeral Mass on Thursday, July 3, at 10:30 am, both at St. Kilian Catholic Church, 26872 Estanciero Drive, Mission Viejo (www.stkilianmissionviejo.org). There will be a reception following the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Peggy’s memory to the Mission Hospital Foundation for the new Neuroscience and Spine Institute, which the Hospital Auxiliary is supporting. Our loss is balanced by God’s gain. An incredible, loving person who made people feel special: Peggy had the wonderful gift of hospitality that touched countless lives – not only those who knew her dearly, but to total strangers seeking help as they entered the lobby of Mission Hospital. Without question – Peggy will be missed. Jim Frey

  2. I was heartbroken when I heard the news of Peggy’s sudden passing. Our hearts go out to the Barrett family. “Aunt” Peggy was such a caring, loving, and wonderful person. We always looked forward to her visits. Heaven has gained another angel. She will be missed. Love Trish (Fiore) Drpich

  3. Peggy was a dear friend for 28 years. She played a much better game of bridge than she thought she did, she made even the simplest dish into a feast, she made all who came to her home feel like an honored guest, she always had a word of encouragement when I needed it most and she made a room light up with her smile. I loved her giggle, her stories about her beloved grand children, and her boasting about the best husband in the world. She was adored by Jonny and she knew it. She appreciated him and all the things he did so willingly for her. I will miss Peggy but I am comforted to know when I too am called home, she will be there to greet me. I love you Miss Peggy B.

I will miss Peggy so much. She was a warm caring person. Always a smile and something positive to say about everyone and everything. She was a sub for our
bridge group and seemed to think she couldn’t play well, but seemed to go home the winner much of the time. I was always so happy to see her at bridge and we would
hug and kiss and rock back and forth like little silly girls! She was an example of God’s love in this crazy world. She is with the Lord and I’m sure she is fixing macaroni salad for a feast! (We all loved it!) Love you, dear Peggy! Marysu Paine, Dana Point, California

Peggy has been a vital part of our lives for many years, and her passing has left a huge void in our hearts. Her beautiful smile and sparkling eyes are now lighting up Heaven. But we will always keep her with us. Her joy, caring, love and compassion have made such a difference in this world and I know John and her family will always be filled with pride for all she has given. We miss you so much, Peggy, but we love you for all you brought to our lives.
