Obituary
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Patricia “Pat” Mary Terry, who departed from us on March 21, 2024, at the age of 86. Born to Thelma and Wilson Terry on October 9, 1937, in Waterford, New York, Pat was a nurturer to her very core. People were drawn to her easy-going nature and upbeat personality. She was a devoted friend and was voted “most popular” at her high school in Waterford, New York. Pat cherished her high school friendships which lasted throughout her life.
After moving to California in 1964, she initially planned to return to New York someday. But after seeing the ocean, she knew she was truly home.
Pat raised her two children alone, which was no easy task. She dedicated her life to her children and was a shining example of integrity, strength and love. In addition to being a devoted mother, Pat was a cherished friend and a pillar of her community. She dedicated herself to nurturing and supporting others, putting their needs above her own. She took care of elderly neighbors, served in her church and was always ready to lend a helping hand to whomever needed it.
Pat worked as the lead payroll clerk for Saddleback Valley Unified School District from 1976 until her retirement in 2001. After retiring, she dedicated herself to volunteer work, most notably with the Red Cross, from which she received the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2003 and the Sunshine Award in 2005. She also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2004 and 2009.
Pat enjoyed reading biographies and mysteries, gardening and birdwatching in her backyard, and being near the ocean. One of her favorite places was Dana Point Harbor, where she would often walk and enjoy the coastal scenery.
Predeceased by her parents and her brother, Wilson Terry, Pat is survived by daughter, Alison Gyves Hamchuk and her husband Gary Hamchuk, and her son, Gary Gyves.
A private celebration of life will be held on April 10, 2024, in Dana Point, California, after which her ashes will be scattered in the ocean she so dearly loved. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
Rest in peace, mom. You are deeply missed and will never be forgotten.
