Obituary

Norman J. Peters, Jr.

Loving son, brother, husband, dad, and grandpa.

Norman (Norm) Peters was born May 4, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio and was a loving husband to his wife of 53 years, Marlene; a proud dad of 2 daughters, Laura and Melissa; and proud grandfather of 1 grandson, Quinn, and 1 granddaughter, Delia. His family also includes his son-in-law, Alden; 1 younger sister, Linda; and 1 niece, Vanessa.

He attended Catholic school in Ohio and obtained his BA in History from John Carroll University in Ohio. He was a postal clerk for the US Postal Service for over 45 years until his retirement in 2011.

Norm met Marlene in Florida when he was stationed with the US Army in Georgia. He was then stationed in Germany, and they wrote letters until his return to the US and their wedding in 1968.

Norm became a parishioner at St Kilian Catholic Church in 1972, when he and Marlene brought their family to the home Norm would live in for nearly 50 years in Mission Viejo and where Marlene still lives. He and Marlene would pray and sing together every Sunday, and even when mass was virtual and online and his voice was weakening, he would pray and sing in a nice, strong voice.

Every summer he would drive his family on cross-country road trips taking them through all 48 US states and Canada in the family car. Even once his daughters had moved out, he and Marlene continued to take road trips across the US. He was the driver of the family and taught both of his daughters to drive and drove the family to piano lessons, swim practices and meets, cross-country meets, and countless activities throughout the years.

Norm loved gardening, watching Angels baseball, watching college and pro football, going to musicals, doing jigsaw puzzles, and watching Jeopardy. He always loved Christmas and took great pride each Christmas in putting out the large nativity figurines he had painted.

He passed away peacefully Sunday morning, November 7th. He was able to pray and be with his family until the end, and that was a comfort and blessing for him and his family.

The funeral mass for Norman will be on Thursday, November 18th at 10:15 AM at St. Kilian Church in Mission Viejo. Rosary will precede the mass at 9:45 AM.

  1. We will miss Norm’s hiyas and seeing him tend to his roses. A favorite memory is that he always tossed our kids’ many wayward balls back over the fence without a complaint. Peace and Love to the Peters family and loved ones, from the Ponders.
