Nancy C. Whelan of Newport Beach, California passed peacefully in her home on September 28, 2025 at the age of 92.

Nancy was born in Los Angeles in 1933 to Albert and Anna Mispagel and was the third of four sisters: Elizabeth, Mary, Laura (all deceased). She graduated from Dorsey High School in 1950 and the University of Southern California in 1954 where she was recognized with Helen of Troy honors and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority where she formed many lifelong friendships.

Nancy married Martin E. Whelan, Jr. (Marty) in 1956 in Los Angeles where they welcomed two children, before moving to Whittier where they raised their five children. She was active in St. Bruno Catholic Church, Friendly Hills Country Club, Whittier Women's Club and National Charity League with her two daughters. She enjoyed spending time at their second homes in Newport Beach and Lake Arrowhead.

They moved to Newport Beach in 1988 and she became active in her new parish, Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church, as a religious education teacher and Eucharistic Minister. She enjoyed playing tennis into her 70's, was active in the local bridge community into her 90's and thoroughly enjoyed hosting a weekly prayer group. She supported UC Irvine through her membership in ARCS.

Nancy is survived by four of her five children: Daniel (Sharon), Catherine Ramsay (Sheldon), M. Edward III (Deborah), Matthew (Susan); ten grandchildren: Christopher (Priyanka), Jessica (Connor) Bernstein, Nicholas (Avalee), Jeffrey, Ian (Savannah), John (Charlotte), Sister Monica Baptiste, O.P., Kathryn Scarborough, Mary, Elizabeth; and six great-grandchildren: Lucy, Evan, Peter, Wes, Brooke and Hallie, all of whom she adored. She was predeceased by her husband Marty, her youngest daughter Monica Scarborough and Monica's husband Claude.

She was an avid fan of USC football, converted her husband into one, and remained a USC supporter to the end.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Newport Beach, on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. Donations may be sent to the Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecilia ( nashvilledominican.org ) or to your favorite charity.
