Obituary

Nancy E. Johnston died peacefully in her home on June 16th, 2014 following a long courageous battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed. Nancy was a great person; loved by her husband Robert L. Johnston (Bob), her children Stephanie (Tom) Steven (Rose) and Dan (Monica), as well as her stepchildren Stephen (Jodi), Robert (Teresa), Cheryl (Bud), Mike (Yukari), and Karyn. Nancy had 7 grandchildren: Matthew, Monica, Caroline, Charlotte, Bradley, Luke, and Lily. 14 step grandchildren, Anthony, Nick, Christian, Jordan, Evan, Samuel, John, Tom, Riley, Casey, Noah, Sara, Logan and Cooper.

She had many friends, some of whose friendships began in the 1950’s from Indiana, where she was born and raised. Nancy attended Ball State University and Indiana University where she attained a Masters in Education. After raising her family in Indiana and Michigan, Nancy moved to Newport Beach California 20 years ago.

Nancy started her career as an educator and administrator in early childhood and ended her career educating and overseeing new teachers at Cal State Fullerton.

Nancy was very active and loved to travel, she was active in the American Cancer Society, OC Barons, Interfaith Hunger Walks, and her church Our Lady Queen of Angels.

Nancy was a wonderful mother, loving wife, proud grandmother and loyal friend. She was a very sweet, kind, humorous, strong, brave and much admired woman. Nancy had an incredible sense of bringing people together. Her family and friends’ lives were greatly touched by having known her.

A memorial mass for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, June 24th, 2014 @ 10am at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church in Newport Beach, California. Reception to follow. If anyone is so inclined, the family asks that a donation to the organization that was so meaningful to Nancy, The Orange County American Cancer Society – OC Barons League, 1940 E. Deere Ave. #100, Santa Ana, CA, 92705 would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I feel so fortunate to have known and worked with Nancy through the Interfaith CROP Hunger Walk. When I started on staff with CWS 12 years ago, Nancy helped me get my legs and bearings as I was learning about the Walk and the Newport Beach / Irvine / Mesa communities. She always did whatever needed to be done with grace and a beautiful, friendly smile that made everyone feel welcome and included.

    My sympathy goes out to Bob and her family. I hope you take comfort in the happy memories. I’m sure there are too many to count!
