Obituary

Murrieta Carolyn Lohr

On December 29, 2014, Murrieta, known affectionately as Tati, by her nieces and nephews, passed away peacefully at her home on Lido Isle. At the time of her passing, Murrieta was cared for and comforted by her caregiver, Marie Bolton. Murrieta was 86 years old.

Murrieta Carolyn Guenther was born on March 20, 1928 in Los Angeles, California. She was the first child born to Florence Anna Guenther and Rudolph Guenther.

Murrieta was named after Guenther’s Murrieta Hot Springs, the resort that was founded by her grandfather, Fritz Guenther, father, Rudolph Guenther and uncle, Hugo Guenther. She was so proud of “The Springs” and had fond memories of time there spent with her family. She especially enjoyed her work at “The Springs” during her summer vacations and in the office subsequent to her high school graduation.

Murrieta grew up in Beverly Hills and Balboa Beach with her parents and her younger sister, Dorothy Ann. She was a graduate of Berkeley Hall and Marlborough Schools.

Murrieta moved to Lido Isle in September, 1958. Over the course of her years on Lido, she enjoyed sailing, tennis and walking around the island. As her health declined, she loved to stand on her front porch and visit with her neighbors as they walked by. She loved her beautiful home. She particularly enjoyed her garden and growing beautiful roses. Murrieta loved music and her home was always filled with the strains of her current favorite. Most recently she was a huge fan of Michael Buble. Murrieta could be seen stylishly driving in her Mercedes 280 SE Coupe and had fun participating in the Lido 4th of July Parade.

Murrieta was a life-long USC Football fan and enjoyed going to the games with her SC friends. She enjoyed traveling, fine dining and had numerous trips to Europe and the east coast accompanied by her long-time companion, Bill Oldham and her sister, Dorothy Ann.

Family meant everything to Murrieta and she doted on her sister, her nieces and their children. She was a fixture at all of their holiday celebrations. She took pride in their accomplishments. She was very sociable and lived her life with style and grace.

Murrieta was preceded in death by her parents Rudolph and Florence Guenther, her long-time companion, William Oldham, and her dear nanny, Margaret “Nonie” Jones.

Murrieta is survived by her sister, Dorothy Ann Stanley of Monterey, California, her niece, Patricia Ann Reilly and partner, John Rocque of San Dimas, California and her niece Pamela Lynn McKay and husband Theodore A. McKay of Malibu, California. She is also survived by her many grand and great nieces and nephews: Michael Reilly and Robert Haerr; Brendan Reilly; Kris and Tanya Feldmann and their three sons, Hunter, Luke and Charlie; Philip McKay and Monica de la Hoya and son William; and Briar McKay.

Murrieta will be laid to rest in the Guenther Family Plot during a private ceremony at Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery, 1831 West Washington Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90007.

A celebration of Murrieta’s life will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the Lido Isle Community Association. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Murrieta’s name to The Hoag Hospital Foundation, Gift Box, where she was a volunteer for over 40 years.
