Obituary

Mildred “Milly” Joyce Dunterman Nordstrom (90), of Laguna Hills, CA, went to be with her Lord on September 20, 2021, peacefully at her home.

Milly was born on August 1, 1931, in Chicago, IL, and at a young age, she received the Lord as her personal Savior after a neighbor invited her to church. Milly was married to Donald E. Nordstrom, and they were long-time church members, first at Salem Baptist Church, Chicago and Orland Park, IL, and later at Woodbridge Community Church, Irvine, CA.

Milly and Don Nordstrom knew of each other from a young age as they both attended Emerald Avenue Baptist Church (later became Salem). When a pastor suggested Milly volunteer as a young adult in the children’s primary department – where Don also happened to be teaching – their lifelong romance began. They were married on October 17, 1953.

Milly and Don spent their child-rearing years in Chicago and Western Springs, IL, where they were actively involved in Salem Baptist Church together. A job change for Don brought them to southern California in 1984 and eventually to Woodbridge Community Church. Throughout her adult life, Milly volunteered in many capacities at church and her children’s schools, including recording secretary, PTA co-president with Don, art mom, high school Sunday School teacher, and Vacation Bible School director.

Milly was preceded in death by her husband, Don, her brother, Albert Dunterman (Georgia deceased), and her brother, Eugene Dunterman (Patricia deceased). She is survived by her sister, Leona Falk (Roderick deceased); her children, Dawn (Stanton) Nelson, Dwight (Jewel) Nordstrom, Dwayne (KimHong) Nordstrom, and Donna Nordstrom; her grandchildren, Diane (Chris) Walker, Dean Nelson, Daniel Nordstrom, Devyn Nordstrom, Deborah Nordstrom, Tiffany Nordstrom, and Jasmine Nordstrom; two great-grandchildren, Eleanora Walker and Avery Walker; and many nieces and nephews who dearly loved Aunt Milly.

Milly loved the Lord and her family, was an encouraging friend to many, and worked hard at whatever she did. She will be laid to rest in El Toro Memorial Park in Lake Forest, CA alongside Don, at a family graveside service.

  1. Don andMillie were a wonderful couple. Through their devotion to the teens at Salem they influenced many of us. There are so many memories I could not mention them all. Retreats, Graduation banquets. Them riding kids home after meetings in their big black car which I thing they bought from a funeral home. I lived close to their house and remember going there to hang out and get girl advice from Millie. Watched their kids grow up. I have a picture of Dwight and me standing in from of the church bus . Dwight was probably 3 or so. Millie was always upbeat and smiling. Millie and Don were great friends.I will cherish their memories. PS.. They did a great job raising their kids. Yes you guys.

  2. Don and Milly played an important part in the lives of Joan and myself at a pivotal time in our lives while we were teens at Salem Baptist Church.. Looking back over the years (we’ve been married for 56 years now) we realized on a deeper level how their commitment to us and others was sacrificial love that made a difference in how we viewed life and how we would live out ours.

  3. Millie and Don and their family became lifelong friends at Salem Baptist Church in Chicago, wen Walt joined the staff in 1968. Don and Millie were active as deacon and deaconess, Sunday school teachers, youth leaders! They were a blessing to our family. We moved to California in 1974 to work with Southwest Baptist Conference. It was wonderful to have Don and Millie near when they moved to California! Their love and graciousness and positive influence on our family is a lifelong blessing to us!

  4. Our sincere sympathy to each member of the Nordstrom family. We were just talking about your mom this week! Milly and Don were such a source of friendly encouragement to us while we were at Salem Baptist Church. They also gave wise and loving leadership to our entire church body. They were greatly missed when they relocated to CA. So grateful that the Gospel is true, and we will all rejoice together again unendingly.
