It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Edward Thornfield, a devoted husband and the ultimate hero to his three boys, who passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025.

To his colleagues at the Long Beach Police Department, he was Officer Thorny , a trusted and tireless public servant for twenty years. To his family, he was Dad — a loving husband, an incredible father, and the person who could always be counted on for a laugh or guidance.

Born to Edward Harold Thornfield and Lillian Anita Watts on April 18, 1942, Michael found his passion for service early in life. A short term in the Army led him to a career in law enforcement. He was known for his calm demeanor, whether on patrol or in the genuine relationships he built with those he served.

Beyond his professional life, Michael's greatest joy was his wife, Norma Lee Carlsen, with whom he shared forty nine years of marriage. Their love was steady and strong, marked by laughter, deep respect, and a partnership that carried them through every season of life. To his sons, their marriage was the model of devotion — he adored Norma, and it was clear in the way he cared for her, celebrated her, and cherished even the smallest moments together.

Michael was a devoted and active father, happiest with a fishing pole in hand. He taught his sons the importance of hard work, kindness, and standing up for what is right.

He was also a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, whose love and guidance extended warmly across generations.

Michael is survived by his three sons Edward, Adam, and David, along with three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He will be remembered with profound respect and admiration for his life of service, humor, and love, which impacted the lives of countless others.
