IRVINE, Calif.’Michael William Cecil, 66, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, January 17, 2013. He succumbed to pneumonia complicated by his long courageous battle with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Michael was born on November 26, 1946 in Ames, Iowa, to Dr. J.J. Cecil’deceased’and Maxine (Meckes) Cecil. He graduated from Armstrong High School in Armstrong, Iowa, in 1964, and served in the U.S. Army from 1967-69.

Following his military service, Michael moved to Southern California and attended California State University, Fullerton, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting/finance. He worked as a loan agent/mortgage broker in the banking industry, and later started his own business.

He met Ginny in the early 1990s. The couple married on November 4, 1991 and resided in Irvine, California. In 1995, their son, Ryan Michael, was born.

Michael had an adventurous spirit and thoroughly enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and internationally. He had a Midwest easiness and friendliness about him. Michael never net a stranger. I just found out that my Army buddy has passed away. I’m lost for words.

  4. I just learned that my brother’s wonderful roommate at South Dakota State is no longer with us. Rolland McLaughlin and Mike had some great stories to tell of their adventures around Brookings. When Mike came to visit Rolland, I met Mike, and later had the privilege of meeting his great family in Iowa. I am so happy he found a special love with Ginny and that they had a son, Ryan, There aren’t enough superlatives to describe Mike. We lost a positive light in this world..
