Mercedes Haight
1931-2019
Mercedes Louise Haight, age 87, a resident of San Juan Capistrano, CA, passed away peacefully from lymphoma in her home surrounded by her family on Monday, May 13, 2019.
She is survived by her beloved husband James and their five children, Mike (Michele), Tom (Candy), Cindy Ball (Randy), Barbara Bill (George), and Joanne Buchs (Mike), seventeen grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.
Mercedes, an only child (as she loved to tell everyone!), was born September 14, 1931, to Bernard and Helen Legler in Rochester, New York. She attended Sacred Heart grade school and graduated from Nazareth Academy in Rochester.
Having met in high school, James and Mercedes were married upon his return from Navy boot camp on April 14, 1952, in Rochester. (Not until sometime later did they discover that they were in the same First Holy Communion photo.)
After five months in Rhode Island at the Naval Storekeepers School, Jim was stationed in Japan for a year. In 1953 the newlyweds were able to move to Long Beach, where Jim was stationed until discharge in December 1955. They raised their family in Southern California, living in Anaheim, Canyon Lake, Wildomar, and settling in San Juan Capistrano.
Mercedes, or "Cedy" as others called her, first loved being a devoted homemaker to her family. She enjoyed going to the beach, traveling in their motorhome throughout the U. S., crocheting, playing cards, reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, and enjoying a glass or two of her "white wine."
Mercedes was greatly loved by many friends as well as her family, and she will be extremely missed. We take comfort knowing she is at peace with our precious Lord and Savior.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Mercedes' name to:
