Her Legacy Includes:
6 Children
22 Grand Children
39 Great Grand Children
Our mom was born in Seattle Washington.
Raised in San Pedro CA, she dropped out of High school at 14 to marry and start a family. She gave birth to five sons and one daughter by the age of 23… was divorced by 25 and raised her six children as a single mom…and we never missed a meal or church or little league…
Mom worked full time as a hair stylist and she was a proud owner of her own business “Maxine’s Glamour Castle”. She finished night school to earn a GED by age 30.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree from CSUDH by age 40… after earning her master’s degree, she worked for the State of California as an analyst until she retired.
She loved to travel, she studied Italian in Florence and performed with her choir in Spain, went on a photo safari in Africa, went on a pilgrimage in Turkey. She visited her daughter in England and Okinawa, and met family in the Philippines.
She was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in her late 60’s (a disease that claimed her dad and younger brothers). After chemo and radiation, she was in remission until mid 80’s. When she was diagnosed with cancer again and received chemo and radiation again until 2022, but her weakened body was no longer able to accept treatment. She suffered from shingles… and during treatment fell and fractured her hip … her last few months were a struggle to get comfortable. She was always a woman of faith who loved to serve God by helping at her church. Singing in the choir was her passion… she was an Iron woman and will always be our Hero!

I met Maxine when we lived and worked in Sacramento. There was a group of us that worked for the State of California and met for dinner.
I moved to Arizona a few years ago, but in the last year I’ve spent a lot of time in Laguna Woods. We often went to dinner and were always able to solve most of the world’s problems. I really appreciated our discussions about theology, or an evening at the Segerstrom Center. Once I saw her performance at the Segerstrom Concert Hall in Choral Fest, and she gave me a new appreciation for choral music.
I will greatly miss her companionship and strength.
