He was than deployed to Afghanistan in November 2006 for fifteen months. While over seas he was a chaplain assistant to Chaplain Greg Mc Vey who Matt became good friends and battle buddies with. They stuck together and learned alot from each other. Matthew returned to Fort Stewart February 2008. He loved being with his wife and kids. Matthew is remembered as a loving dad, a great friend, and a hero to many. His favorite carton was Spongebob Squarepants. He loved watching a good movie and got a kick out of inviting everyone to his gun show. Matthew was extremely proud to serve his country. He loved to travel and see new places and learn about new things. He loved the San Diego Chargers. They were his team. He loved watching and following the Chargers wins/losses. 3. I never knew Matthew Simmons. I was in traffic the other day and saw a decal with his Memorial on the back windshield of a vehicle driving in Lake Forest. I thought how beautiful gesture to remember someone. I searched the internet and learned a bit about him. Hope this helps sharing this with those who may still grieve.
