Obituary

Martha Alicia Soria, 58 of Mission Viejo, California, passed away on May 26, 2013 after a courageous and remarkable battle with pancreatic cancer. She passed in peace and comfort surrounded by her loving family.

She is survived by her husband Sergio of 31 years and her 3 boys, Sergio, Carlos, and Gabriel, and countless friends.

Martha was born on June 29, 1954 in Coalcoman, Michoacan to Daniel O. Avila and Maria Dolores Lua. Martha moved to Los Angeles at a young age and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1972. She met her husband at the age of 27, fell instantly in love and was married by 28. She had 3 boys and moved to Mission Viejo to raise her family.

Martha had many hobbies. She enjoyed bowling in tournaments with her youngest son and socializing with anyone and everyone. Martha had an amazing aptitude for gardening. Her garden was always in bloom with vibrant roses and her kitchen was always in supply of fruits and vegetables. She was known by all to be an amazing cook; anyone who sat at her table left full and happy.

Martha was an unbelievably selfless person who lived her life to serve others. She raised her family and took care of her husband, but it didn’t stop there. Martha single-handedly took care of her Father, Mother, 2 aunts and 2 brothers in their elderly age and in time of illness. Martha’s natural ability to love and care inspired everyone she encountered. She was an angel living among men. She will be missed but her lessons and good nature will always live in our hearts.

  1. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Martha, that didn’t keep me from knowing this wonderful woman. I have been close friends with her son Carlos since ’98 and she was the subject of many conversations. For the past few years especially, as Carlos and I grew closer, I noticed one thing; Carlos never ate at my house. While I’m eating leftovers, or a bowl of top ramen, Carlos would be describing the most delicious home cooked meals that he had just eaten at his house with his mom and family. I was jealous! I know she was a person filled with love, and someone who would always put family first. I will miss her and the joy she brought her sons. One day, when were all together again, I wont be shy to ask her for one of those loving meals that put smiles on everyone’s face.

  2. Martha was the mother of three boys that are very close friends of mine and have been for nearly 15 years–Carlos, Sergio and Gabriel. When I was fortunate enough to spend time with her and her family, “welcome” doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt. This woman made me feel as if I was part of her family: she willingly took me into her home for meals, for parties, for any reason at all. She will never know how much it meant to be treated as one of her own sons and always welcomed into her home. Some of the times that were spent together were not always the easiest times for Martha. To say that she was a strong woman is an injustice to her character. Martha could be found tending for others even if she herself was feeling weak; she was selfless, loving and compassionate to any and all that she cared about.

We all know that you are now resting in peace, and though you are greatly missed, we will all be together again soon.

Martha was an amazing woman, She loved her family more than anything on the face of the earth. I had the pleasure of knowing her for the past 20 years of my live. As a child I would always ride my bike over from down the street to see if Carlos or any of the boys could come out to play. She would always greet me a warm hello and invite me in (and of course try to make me some good authentic mexican food 🙂 During the summer she would always have all of us boys over for swimming and an occasional street hokey game. Words can not describe how much she will be missed. She will always be in our hearts and looking after us from paradise.

  5. We were lucky to be neighbors of the Sorias for almost 20 years and in that time we were treated like special family. We always felt guilty but so happy when a plate of home-cooked food made it’s way to our door. Martha was the best example of kindness that you can find. We were always impressed with the way Martha cared for her mother in addition to how she raised her family with Sergio.

She had such pride in her boys and her husband and they in turn were all devoted to Martha and never wanted to disappoint her. Martha’s legacy is her boys and all the people who loved her and will always carry her kindness in their hearts. We were so lucky to know Martha and we will miss her warm smile and her great laugh.
