Born on June 25, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Marlene spent her early years in the Philadelphia area before also making homes in Pittsburgh, Tucson, and ultimately Lake Forest, California. Her lifelong love of learning and helping others was evident in both her personal and professional life. She was a devoted stay-at-home mother for many years, raising her five children with unwavering love and commitment. She also worked in a variety of roles that showcased her strong work ethic and heart for service—including positions at General Electric Company, Campus Crusade for Christ, and Concordia University Irvine, where she was known for her warmth and dedication.
Marlene’s life was filled with creativity, service, and a sense of adventure. She was a stained glass artist and an avid volunteer—serving as a docent at Heritage Hill Historical Park and as an usher at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. A passionate traveler and cruise enthusiast, Marlene delighted in exploring the world and sharing her experiences with family and friends. She also had a deep love of cooking and baking, always ready with a homemade treat for those she loved.
Marlene was predeceased by her beloved husband, Rev. Dr. Garth D. Ludwig, and her longtime partner, John Harrell. She is survived by her loving children: Jane (Steve), Lisa (Jeff), Jonathan (Lili), Christy (John), and Sara (Eddie); her cherished grandchildren: Stephanie, Heidi, Sophia, Andrew, Christian, Josiah, Elijah, Abby, Ally, Annika, Noah, Micah, and Emma; and her great-grandchildren, Blaise and Vanessa. She also leaves behind her dear sister, Cathy Lynam, and countless friends whose lives were touched by her kindness and grace.
Marlene’s final days were spent surrounded by the love and presence of her children, who were by her side during her last hours—just as she had always been there for them throughout their lives. A woman of unwavering faith, Marlene’s legacy lives on in the family she so deeply loved and in the many lives she enriched with her generosity, strength, and joyful spirit.
