Obituary

Marlene Mary Manning passed away at home surrounded by her family on August 17, 2021. The second child of Hector and Julia (VanDamme) Gekiere, Marlene was born on July 22, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan.

She attended St. Clare of Montefalco Catholic School and St. Ambrose High School, both in Grosse Pointe Park, MI. When she was in first grade, the third grade boy down the street met her and knew she was special. Many years later, she married that boy, the love of her life, Doyle Manning, on September 29, 1956 in Grosse Pointe Park, MI.

Together they had 7 children Chris (JoAnn) of Johnston, IA, Jeff (Gina) of Portola Hills, CA, Michele Edwards (Robert) of San Clemente, CA, Sharon Lewis (Todd) of Dana Point, CA, Tim (Theresa) of Mission Viejo, CA, Leanne Burke (Chris) of Mission Viejo, CA, Megan Romero (Jesse) of Frisco, TX.

They have been blessed with 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, so far.

She is also survived by her sister Linda West (Mike, deceased), brothers Art Gekiere (Carol) and Dennis Gekiere (Dolores) all of Michigan, and several nieces and nephews. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents and brother Morris Gekiere.

Marlene and Doyle relocated several times between Germany, Wisconsin, Illinois and California for Doyle’s jobs and with each move, Marlene formed and cherished lifelong friendships. She loved to travel and took several trips abroad with Doyle and her friends. She was an expert seamstress, quilter and she liked to knit. She loved to read a good book, watch her “stories” (which started with Soap Operas and transitioned to crime dramas with handsome actors). She always enjoyed getting together for coffee after church with her friends. She was primarily a stay at home mother and housewife extraordinaire with so many interests and yet, as busy as she was, she always found time to volunteer her time and talents wherever she could, be it at church or with her grandchildren.

Marlene led a very faith-filled life. Her love for her husband, children and grandchildren were paramount and she was always there to help whenever needed. She taught them and led them by her patient, caring example of how to live. She will be deeply missed by so many.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, San Clemente with burial following at Pacific View Memorial Park, Corona Del Mar, CA.

  1. Our Deepest Sympathy to Doyle and the Entire Family,
Marlene was so special to all of us in our family. She was caring and interesting. She had so many qualities to admire and for us to emulate as a young Catholic family (at that time). She knew all of our Children by name and always attended Knights of Columbus functions. I always enjoyed giving her a hug and even ran into her in the ER one recent Christmas Eve. She had a royalty about her, and was adored by Doyle. One year they made it a point to attend my Birthday Suprise party and we had such a wonderful time! I will miss her smile and laugh and running into her at Church and her home. Marlene truly set a high bar for all of us to follow and surely this day is beside our Lord and Master in heaven. Blessings upon her and Dole and Family
