Obituary

Noted urologist Mark Sullivan, one of the key figures in the growth and prominence of Mission Hospital and known as much for his eclectic hobbies as
for his surgical skills, died at his Monarch Beach home Saturday night with his family at his bedside. He was 58.

Cause of death was complications from diabetes and renal disease.

Survivors include his wife, Maureen, daughters Maribeth Cooper Bruce and Treisa Cassens Michael a son, Tyrone Tavasci Stephanie, three grandchildren, Emma, Kelsea and Morgan, and a fourth grandchild due in May, a brother, Christopher Sullivan Jill, and a sister, Karen Sullivan.

Services are scheduled for 5:00pm Monday, February 28, 2005 at the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano. The family has requested the in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mission Hospital Foundation or the Corpus Christi Catholic-Christian Church building fund.

Dr. Sullivan, who served on the Mission Hospital Board of Trustees beginning in late1980s, and also as chief of surgery, raised prize orchids and roses, collected rare coins and books, held patents on several inventions, wrote two novels and held memberships in two societies of magicians.

Born into a pioneering Wyoming family, Dr. Sullivan earned his M.D. at UC Irvine’s College of Medicine, did his residency at the University of Oregon Health Science Center in Portland, and opened his private practice in Orange County in 1977.

In addition to his official duties at Mission Hospital, he was instrumental in the formation of the Mission Hospital Foundation, the hospital’s fundraising arm, bestowing Mission Hospital with its first-ever philanthropic donation. Dr. Sullivan had remained active in the Foundation until his death, both through his generous financial support and through his involvement in a number of boards and committees.

In July 2002, Mission Hospital honored Dr. Sullivan with its annual Spirit of Giving Award for its core value of Service, recognizing him for the exceptional care he has provided to his patients and their families throughout the years.

Dr. Sullivan was a Diplomate in Adult and Pediatric Urology and American Board of Urology in addition to holding memberships in the American Urologic Assn., the American Medical Assn., the American Nephrology Society, the American Fertility Society, the American Assn. for the Advanced Sciences, the American Society of Law and Medicine, the European Society of Pediatric Urology, the California Medical Assn., the Orange County Medical Assn., the New York Academy of Sciences, the Society of American Magicians and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Memorial Mass Monday, February 28, 2005 ~ 5:00P.M. @ The Mission Bascilica San Juan Capistrano. Private Interment.

  5. Dr. Sullivan gave me my first job when I was 14, with my mother, Sue Brooks. He was such a wonderful man to work with. The Sullivans are a loving and caring family, and I was blessed to have been a part of there practice, and life.
