Obituary
MARILYNN HAYCOCK GARLOCK
7 October 1929—14 January 2024
Marilynn was born October 7, 1929 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Gilbert Floyd Haycock and Ruth Mary Schaub; being the third of five children. A year later, the Haycock family moved to Los Angeles, California, and Marilynn remained in Southern California the rest of her life.
One of her favorite classes in school was sewing. She grew to become a talented and prolific seamstress, creating thousands of pieces for loved ones and for charitable purposes. Thanks to Marilynn’s mother, music always played an important part in family life, and Marilynn sang in many events in school, church, and the community. To the end of her life, Marilynn knew by memory the music and words of most of the hymns sung in the LDS church; always singing a sweet alto.
In 1942, 17 year-old Jerry Garlock first met 14 year-old Marilynn, and for him it was love at first sight. They eventually became engaged, and were married December 19, 1947 in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. They became parents of five children; Craig, Dana, Jay, Judy, and Jerry.
Jerry and Marilynn raised their family in Downey and then Torrance, California. These were the busy years of raising children, supporting her husband through three college degrees and his busy career, along with their service in the church. Marilynn noted this time of life as the years of large piles of laundry and buying ten quarts of milk per day; and she loved every minute of motherhood. She always had a bloom of flowers in the yard and she always found ways to serve in the neighborhood.
They moved to Laguna Niguel in 1988. Their volunteer church service continued through the years, including Jerry’s 30 years as a stake patriarch, with Marilynn as his scribe. Additionally, they served together for 23 years in the LDS temples in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Newport Beach. Also, Marilynn served 25 years as a volunteer at Saddleback Hospital in Laguna Hills. Jerry and Marilynn’s later years took them to three years as full-time church missionaries, in Washington, D.C.; Bangalore, India; and Nauvoo, Illinois.
Marilynn is preceded in death by her husband Jerry; brothers Gene and Dick; and sister Renee. She is survived by her sister Janice, and her children, Craig (and wife, Joette); Dana (and wife, Beth); Jay (and wife, JoAnn); Judy (and husband, Jonn); and Jerry (and wife, Eileen). Jerry and Marilynn were blessed with 21 grandchildren, who in turn have added 72 great-grandchildren. All of them would confirm that Grandma Marilynn was the ideal grandma.
Marilynn wrote the following in 2006: “It has been a wonderful life to share with such a giant of a man who has the integrity, benevolence, and love and devotion toward his family and church. I thank my Heavenly Father for blessing me with such a wonderful partner. May I leave my testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, that you will know of its truthfulness. I am grateful for our Savior, who gave His life for us. This is the time to become more Christlike.”
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 27, at 10:00 a.m., at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 28291 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Niguel, California.
