Maguire
July 30, 1936 – August 2, 2022
Marie Anne Ripa Maguire, 86, died peacefully on August 2, 2022 in Newport Beach, CA with her family by her side. She was the loving wife of Commander Thomas J. Maguire for 64 years. She was born in Newport, RI on July 30,1936 to the late Sebastian and Rita Ripa. She graduated from St. Catherine Academy in Newport, RI in 1954 and The College of New Rochelle in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics.
Family was very important to Marie and shortly after graduating college she started her family with Tom. After raising her six daughters, she started her career as a math and computer literacy teacher at St. Joseph High School in Lakewood, CA. As a math teacher she shared her passion for geometry with her students, encouraging them to see it in the world around them.
After retirement, she and Tom spent summers in Little Compton, RI where her sister Jeanne introduced her to antiques. This led to her second career as an antique collector and dealer. She continued this business with Tom for over 20 years until she passed.
From making delicious meals, to sewing and knitting, Marie enjoyed creating. She loved Sunday night family dinners where anyone was welcomed. Earlier in her life, she enjoyed sewing, including quilting. Later in life, she was an avid knitter and made baby hats to sell as part of her business. It always put a smile on her face to share her interests with her children and grandchildren.
She enjoyed the outdoors, especially her garden and the beach. She expanded her love of gardening by participating in the Sogkonet Garden Club in Little Compton, RI and volunteering at Sherman Gardens in Newport Beach, CA. Beach dinners with her grandchildren in Little Compton were a favorite tradition, always followed by Wood's ice cream sundaes.
She is survived by her husband Thomas, daughters Nancy Maguire of Irvine, CA; Kathryn Burns and husband Ken of Leander, TX; Laurie Maguire of Tustin, CA; Patty Roberts and husband George of Leander, TX; Amy Maguire of Boston, MA and Mary Klute and husband Chris of Denver CO. She leaves 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, extended family and dear lifelong friends. She was the older sister of the late Jeanne Brady Cooney, Nancy Sweetser, and Joseph Ripa.
