Obituary

Marian Edna Barlewort
Born April 3, 1912, Died November 6, 2012

Marian was born to George and Helen Harney of Irish and German decent, on April 3, 1912 in Henry, Ill. She was raised on the family farm, the third oldest of eight siblings.

Marian claimed she never liked country living even as a child, and was glad when it came time for her to enroll in nurse’s training in the city of Chicago following her high school graduation. She entered St. Anthony de Padua School of Nursing, where she graduated as an RN in 1933. Upon graduation she worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Chicago.

During these depression years Marian met her future husband, Jerry Barlewort, whom she married in 1940. They subsequently moved to California where their daughter Nancy was born in 1942. Marian returned to nursing briefly during the late war years, after which she and her husband and daughter returned to California. Their second daughter Diane was born there in 1948.

Marian embraced “The West” and settled into her life as a homemaker, wife and mother. From her first days in their GI bill home in Inglewood, CA she started her garden of roses, that followed her as she later moved to Anaheim, Irvine and finally Laguna Woods. She loved traveling, especially the trips home to see her family in Il. In later years, she and Jerry traveled throughout the U.S., and Europe. They were married one month shy of 70 years.

Marian was considered a quiet person and always maintained she was a listener instead of a talker. She maintained a life of calm but could quickly rise to handle any situation put in front of her. One could be hard pressed to remember when she said an unkind word about anyone.

Marian is pre-deceased by her parents, George and Helen Harney; brothers Paul, David and Ormond Harney; and sisters, Helen Engelbrecht, Patricia Jedlicka, Evelyn Byron and Margaret Gregor. She is also pre-deceased by her daughter Diane, who passed away in 1975.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy Bucher (Jim), son-in-law Bill Fletcher, grandson Steven Bucher, granddaughters Jenelle Jackson (Mark) and Margot Baldwin (Roger), and two great-grandchildren Shayla and Austin Jackson. She leaves many nieces and nephews. We remember lifelong friends now deceased and cherish the remaining friendship of their children.

We thank the kind staff and friends at Prestige Assisted Living in Sierra Vista for two and a half years of gentle care and friendship; and to Hospice – Casa de la Paz, for being there when she needed it most.

Viewing will be held at O’Connor Laguna Hills Mortuary on Tuesday, November 13th from 4:30-6:00 p.m. with a rosary recited prior from 4:00-4:30 pm.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Laguna Woods on Wednesday, November 14th at 9 a.m., followed by interment at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest at 10:30 a.m.

We will always remember Marian’s lovely smile; may she rest in peace.
