Maria Esther Romero Cruz, a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of her family.

Maria was a woman of extraordinary strength, courage, and devotion. She was funny, caring, generous, and, as those who knew her best would say, wonderfully stubborn. But above all, she was deeply devoted to her family and found her greatest purpose in the people she loved.

Maria was born in La Union, El Salvador, one of eventually 5 children from Luis and Angela Cruz. She eventually made her way to the United States in the mid-1980s after meeting her husband, Nelson Rafael, as they sought to build a new life and leave behind the hardships of the civil war. Like so many immigrants who came before her, she arrived with courage, hope, and a determination to create something better for her family.

She and Nelson decided to settle in Southern California, with Maria building a career in realty. She was hardworking, independent, and deeply committed to providing a loving home for her family. But of all the roles she held throughout her life, being a mother was the one she cherished most.

Maria was the mother of her only child, her son Alejandro, and she devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising him. Because Nelson’s work often required frequent travel, Maria was the constant presence in her son’s life. She was there for the everyday moments, the difficult moments, the celebrations, the lessons, and everything in between. She supported him, encouraged him, protected him, and taught him through the example of her own life.

Her love was not always quiet or gentle—sometimes it was strong, determined, and unmistakable—but it was always there. Maria was the kind of mother who would do whatever was necessary for her family. She gave freely, loved deeply, and placed the well-being of those she loved ahead of her own.

She will be remembered for her laughter and sense of humor, her strength and determination, her generosity, and her unwavering dedication to her family. She will also be remembered in the countless little ways that made her who she was—the things she said, the lessons she taught, the traditions she created, and the memories she gave to those fortunate enough to know her.
