Obituary
Margaret M. Cooper, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and registered nurse, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, at the age of 99, in Mission Viejo, California. She was born on February 25, 1925, in Syracuse, New York, to Margaret (Mullen) and Kenneth Greenwood.
Margaret was a pillar of strength and love, raising her large and cherished family of nine children: Kathleen, Michael, Maureen, Diane, Sharon, Brian, Kevin, Thomas, and Sheila. Her legacy continues through her 25 beloved grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren; brother James Greenwood (deceased), nephew James Greenwood (Nancy) Skaneateles, NY.
Margaret was preceded in death by her loving husband George Cooper and her daughter Sharon Cooper.
After graduating from Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse in 1942, Margaret pursued her passion for caring for others by earning her Degree in Nursing from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse in 1947. Her commitment to her profession was evident as she also affiliated with St. Lawrence Mental Hospital and worked at Queens General Hospital on Long Island, New York.
Faith played a significant role in her life. She was an active member of Holy Family Church in Camillus, New York, from 1949 to 1959, and continued her devotion at St. James Church in Arlington Heights, Illinois, from 1959 to 1988. Most recently, she was a cherished member of St. Kilian Catholic Church in Mission Viejo, California, where she found joy and community.
Margaret’s caring nature extended beyond her family and profession. She often volunteered to drive her neighbors to doctors’ appointments, stores, and other errands, reflecting her generous spirit and dedication to helping those around her.
In this time of sorrow and remembrance, the family invites all who knew Margaret to join them in honoring her life and legacy. Vigil Service will be at St. Kilian Church, 26872 Estanciero Drive, Mission Viejo, CA 92691 on February 5, 2025 at 9:50 AM following by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. Graveside Service will take place afterward at Ascension Cemetery, 24754 Trabuco Road, Lake Forest, CA 92630 at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s name to Most Holy Rosary, 111 Roberts Ave, Syracuse, NY 13207.
May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love she so generously shared.
