Lucy Dusini Strohl

Lucy Dusini Strohl was born in the small mining community of Gatliff, Tennessee on March 10, 1907 to Mary Susan Shelby and Dominico Dusini. Dominico emigrated from Vestone, Italy, met and married Mary Susan, and supported his family by working in the coal mines in Kentucky.

Lucy’s father stressed the importance of education on all of his five children — Lucy, her two sisters, Cora and Marie, and two brothers, John and Charlie. Lucy and Cora attended high school at St. Camillus Academy in Corbin, Kentucky.

Lucy’s high school autograph book includes pages with pictures of many of her classmates, and lasting remembrances of years long gone by. She graduated in 1927, and was valedictorian of her graduating class. The spirit, kinship, and relationships of her school days remained with her over the years.

Lucy attended the Good Samaritan Nursing School in Cincinnati and graduated with honors in 1931. She continued to work at “Good Sam” for many years. In Cincinnati, she met and married her late husband, Dan, a sales manager for Addressograph Corp. She learned to balance her nursing career with raising her daughter, Betsy, and taking care of the family.

Lucy, Dan, and Betsy lived on Long Island and in upstate New York until 1959, when they moved to Los Angeles and planted their roots. She continued her nursing career at Doctor’s Hospital in Beverly Hills, concentrating on the care of patients who had undergone eye surgery.

Somewhere along the line, Lucy developed a love for solving crossword puzzles, a hobby that she enjoyed very much. If you had trouble with a crossword puzzle, you surely had to ask Lucy!

Lucy loved to cook, too! She made the best creamy scrambled eggs on Christmas morning for her family. She made batches and batches of cookies for her four grandchildren, Greg, John, Amy, and Bobby. She was always knitting sweaters and sewing clothes, pajamas, and costumes for them. She was their best and only baby-sitter. How can you get a better baby-sitter than an RN?

Her son-in-law, Jim, vows that nobody could make brown turkey gravy like Lucy. He attributes his girth to the wealth of recipes that Betsy learned from her mother, including the apple pie!

Lucy was blessed with her seven great-grandchildren, Austin, Julianne, Ryan, Emily, Alex, Avery, and Lynley.

We will remember Lucy with love for the remainder of our lives. She passed away peacefully on July 3, 2015 in San Pedro, California.
