IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ltcol Markham
Baker Campaigne Sr., Usmc (Retired)
December 23, 1941 – May 28, 2025
Lieutenant Colonel Markham Baker Campaigne Sr., USMC (Retired)
December 23, 1941 – May 28, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Markham Baker Campaigne Sr., beloved husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, respected educator, and decorated U.S. Marine who departed this life peacefully at the age of 83.
Originally from Montclair, New Jersey, and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Mark was a man of enduring faith, character, and commitment to service. Upon graduating from the United States Naval Academy, he served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps for six years, including combat duty in Vietnam. He continued his military service in the Marine Corps Reserve, ultimately retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His military career—defined by honor, personal sacrifice, and steadfast service—unfolded alongside a lifelong vocation in education.
Simultaneously, Mark built a distinguished career as an educator, beginning as a math teacher and basketball coach, and rising to leadership roles at several schools across the country. His tenure as Headmaster of St. Margaret's Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano, California, spanned 17 years and transformed the school into one of the nation's premier independent institutions. Under his leadership, the student body doubled and the campus expanded—but more importantly, he nurtured a community grounded in faith, integrity, and care.
Mark is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Ann (Drew) Campaigne; their four children and spouses: Markham Jr. (Clare), Daniel (Suzanne), Sarah (Jordan), and Deborah; and nine grandchildren: Madeline (Holden), Drew, Jameson, Cooper, Jordan, Joseph, Emily, Jordan Jr., and Emmanuel. He is also survived by his brother Jameson and sister Catherine, along with extended family, and many dear friends and former colleagues. He was preceded in death by his brother Jeffrey, and parents, Jameson and Edith Campaigne.
A devout Christian, Mark lived his faith through service, humility, and a deep love for others. He found joy on a bicycle, on the basketball court, and—most of all—in the company of his family. Even in retirement, he remained actively engaged in education, offering guidance and insight as a consultant to school leaders and boards across the country.
Mark will be remembered for his steady leadership, moral clarity, and enduring kindness. His legacy lives on in the thousands of lives he touched with wisdom, grace, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Visitation and Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 18th at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church. Burial with Military Honors will take place Friday, June 20th at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego.
