Obituary

Lola Mae Long
October 22, 1912 – November 20, 2016

Lola Mae Long passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord on November 20, 2016 at the age of 104.

Born on October 22, 1912 in Alvin, Colorado, she was the third of 5 children born to Willamina and John Asher Conover. During her childhood, she lived in Colorado and Nebraska. She graduated from Trenton High School in 1931. In 1932, she moved to Pasadena, California to live with her older sister.

Lola met the love of her life, George Long of Pasadena and they married in 1935. Their only child, George Frederick Long, was born in August, 1936. Lola and George were a very hardworking couple starting out with roadside fruit and vegetable stands in the San Gabriel Valley. By 1940, they owned a 60-acre date orchard in Coachella Valley and had established Long’s Date Gardens on Foothill Boulevard in Pasadena. George passed away in 1951 at the age of 36. Lola operated the business until her retirement in 1970. In 2002, she moved from Pasadena to Lake Forest to be closer to her family.

Lola was a devoted Christian throughout her entire life. She maintained many friendships over the years, and never missed an opportunity to send a card to those celebrating special events in their lives. She attended Church in the Park (Calvary Chapel) at El Toro Mobile Estates for the past eight years.

Lola is survived by her son George F. Long (Marilyn) of Lake Forest; grandsons, Jeffrey Dickman (Ann Moerer) of Santa Ana, George R. Long (Julie) of NSW, Australia, Christopher Long (Sunday) of Mission Viejo; granddaughter Kelly Long (Denice Flannery) of Rancho Santa Margarita; and great-grandsons, Kurtis and Hayden Long of NSW, Australia and Noah and Micah Long of Mission Viejo. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband George; parents Willamina and John Conover; step-mother, Kate Conover; brothers, Charles Conover and Forrest Conover; and sisters Ruth Shapiro and Edith Thompson.

Services will be held on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 1:00 PM at O’Connor Mortuary, 25301 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Hills, California. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to a charity of your choice.

  1. We will always hold a special place in our heart for sweet Lola, such a beautiful lady and true Christian. I remember taking Lola out for lunch about 5 years ago. Marilyn and George were out of town. I drove Ed’s corvette. Lola would have been 99 years young at that point. She had no trouble getting in and out of the car. Lola always wore her dresses and when she got into and out of the car, you could see her beautiful legs. I recall coming home and telling Ed, “Lola’s legs look younger than mine, she has no cellulite”. What a beautiful lady, inside and out. We will miss you and feel enriched to have known you for so many years…truly a part of our family. May God forever hold you in his warmth and embrace. With love to all of the Long Family from Edward and Karel Tharp

  2. Lola’s son Georg is one of my best friends.

I helped package gift boxes of dates for the Christmas season.

Lola was a caring and loving person. Many good times were spent at the Long’s house.
Their house was my home away from home.

    Fond memories.

    Love,
    Leland
