Obituary
Lily Markley Shearer passed away peacefully at home on February 13, 2024 with her family by her side at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her husband Mike Shearer, who passed away in 2002.
She is survived by her two children, Susan Shearer Chong and Stephen Shearer, their spouses Herbert Chong and Linda Trumpfheller, her granddaughter Sydney and husband Jack DeMuth and grandson Henry Chong. Lily, also known as “Maya” by her family, was born in Aldershot England in 1934 and was raised in Feltham, the only daughter in a family with 4 older brothers.
After completing nursing and midwifery training, Maya emigrated to Toronto, Canada and then on to New York City where she met Mike in November 1962. Only two weeks later, they decided to get married. Lily and Mike proved that there really is such a thing as love at first sight. Her children used to joke that she got married to get a Green Card for immigration. In November 2000, Maya became an American citizen, but still refused to eat hot dogs, however she was a fan of apple pie.
Maya was never happier than when she was surrounded by her family. She had the true “British” sense of humor and loved to laugh. She had an iron will forged during her childhood during World War II. Maya loved animals, especially her beloved dogs that she was devoted to during her life.
Later in life Lily became skilled at needlework. She made many cherished quilts for her family and cross stitch Santa ornaments for her grandchildren each year. She formed deep friendships with the ladies of the local quilt guild. Her home and garden brought her great joy. She would spend hours tending to her garden. Her flowers are a sight to behold, roses, orchids, tulips and more are a reflection of her care and beauty.
Lily will be remembered by those who loved her as a woman of immense strength who loved her family endlessly, cared for her friends deeply, and brought a smile and a laugh to the world.
