Obituary

On Monday December 27, 2021, Leah Michelle Ferguson, loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away at age 34 in Trabuco Canyon, California.  Although she fought very hard, she sadly lost her battle with drugs.

Leah was born on February 15, 1987 to Lee and Susan Ferguson of Mission Viejo, California. She grew up in Mission Viejo and San Jose, California.

Leah was an animal lover and especially loved cats.  Her cat Mavis was an important part of her life.  Leah loved dance all of her life and was on the competition dance team in school. Leah loved music, both current genres and 1960’s Rock & Roll.   She was a fan of Star Wars and identified with Princess Leia.   She enjoyed spending time at Disneyland. She loved baking and decorating her special cupcakes.  Leah was a voracious reader, from fiction and classics to history and spiritual stories.   She loved to analyze song lyrics for deeper meanings.

Leah was known for her quick wit, her infectious smile and her kind and compassionate spirit.   She was forthright and clear in her communications; you always knew where she stood on any issue. Leah always had a kind word or compliment for friends as well as strangers.   She said “a smile and good morning could change a life”.

Leah was preceded in death by her mother Susan Ferguson, uncle Michael Franklin, aunt Shannon Anderson and cousin David Anderson.   She is survived by her father Lee Ferguson; step-mother Dinah Moore; sisters Chantal Braden and Lindsay Getzell; her brothers-in-law Dave Braden and Brendan Getzell; her niece Ysabel Braden; aunt Sandy and uncle Doug Leich; uncle George Anderson; aunt Renee and uncle Dave Matter; cousins Megan Leich, Lisa Lucero and Natalie Arlington.

Our heartfelt thanks to Linda Hetherington, who opened her home to Leah in her last several months, provided love and support, and safe place for her to live.

Always remember to forget
The troubles that passed away.
But never forget to remember
The blessings that come each day.

We cannot share this sorrow
If we haven’t grieved a while.
Nor can we feel another’s joy
Until we’ve learned to smile.

For the test of the heart is trouble
And it always comes with years.
And the smile that is worth the praises of earth
Is the smile that shines through the tears.

  1. Few years ago, having stopped by to pay me a visit, Lee”yours truly in tow!”hit this downtown Santa Cruz store, to shop for few things for Leah back home. Somewhere along the way, with Leah on the cellphone watching intently, he was struggling to show things for her to pick and choose from, so I ended up taking turns with holding several brand new store items in front of the camera. One, two, three,… the two of us were still fooling around shooting fancy T-shirts and sweaters”girls could be exceedingly picky, mind you!”when this sudden urge for breaking out of this monotony funk came upon me. Saying nothing, I instinctively made a face”something which to this here Nosferatu prodigy comes naturally!”at the camera. Gifted as she was with a keen eye for mischief, Leah wasted no time and let her dad right there in front of me know that I am a “great picker-upper””in its own right a hell of a take to lighten the life of a patently anachronism-minded soul like mine with. Never before have I been tagged that way, never since. Coming from someone you had a chance to briefly see only a handful of times makes it even more remarkable. Which goes to show, certain souls have this uncanny ability to make you feel good about”of all things”being yourself.
You may think there is no way the remembrance of a thing as simple, unexpected, and brief as this will dodge the passage of time, and, sometimes, end up staying with you pretty much for the rest of your life. It’s just that, some, do. They do.
