Laurie Eleanor Clark

March 27, 1951 – June 12, 2026

Laurie Eleanor Patrick was born on March 27, 1951, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to her loving parents, Harold and Pauline Patrick.

She was the third of four daughters: Jill, Holly, Laurie, and Patty. Laurie spent her childhood playing with her sisters along the tree-lined streets of Cincinnati, creating memories she would recall fondly throughout her life. She especially loved visiting her father's tavern, where she delighted in sitting on the tall barstools and ordering as many Cokes as she was allowed.

Laurie attended Withrow High School in Cincinnati and graduated with honors in 1969. During her time there, she wrote for the school newspaper, was a cheerleader, participated in Future Teachers of America, the Dolphin Club, and a sorority alongside two of her sisters. In her senior year, Laurie was voted "Most School Spirited," a fitting reflection of her enthusiasm for schooling.

A lifelong learner with a passion for education, Laurie earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Cincinnati in 1973. She later received a Master of Arts in Education, specializing in Elementary Reading, from California State University, Long Beach. Her commitment to learning never ended. Throughout her distinguished teaching career, Laurie continually expanded her knowledge, mentored fellow educators, and helped shape future teachers. In recognition of her dedication and excellence in the classroom, she was honored with the CUSD Teacher of the Year award in 2003. Always generous with her time, she made a lasting impression on many generations and was beloved by both students and fellow teachers.

Laurie met her husband, Jay Clark, during her very first trip to California in 1973. Although they lived on opposite sides of the country, they kept their romance alive through handwritten letters. In 1975, they traveled throughout Europe together, and afterward Laurie made the decision to move to California. They packed up her Chevy Vega and made the cross-country journey to begin their new life. Laurie and Jay were married on May 29, 1976, in a small, beautiful ceremony in Laguna Beach, California, surrounded by family and friends. Together they shared 50 wonderful years of marriage built on enduring love, happiness, and unwavering partnership. Their greatest joy was building a family together and welcoming their two children, Jason and Erin.

Laurie was a devoted mother who dedicated herself to ensuring Jason and Erin's success through shared experiences and by fostering their education and love of learning. From an early age, she encouraged their curiosity and introduced them to art, history, culture, and travel, instilling an appreciation for learning that would remain with them throughout their lives.

Laurie had many interests, talents, and passions. She loved to travel and was fascinated by history, wildlife, and art. She was the master curator of family vacations that encompassed these passions, with examples being visits to Boston, France, a road trip up the coast along PCH, and many trips to Hawaii. She also loved visiting museums, attending plays and musical performances, watching films, and sharing those experiences with the people she loved.

Her love of beauty was evident in her home and garden. Tulips were her favorite flower, and she looked forward to planting them each year, bringing vibrant color and joy to her garden every spring. Laurie delighted in setting elegant dinner tables for family and friends and treasured holiday celebrations, making every gathering feel special. She collected beautiful teapots throughout her travels and took great pleasure in offering guests a wide selection of teas when they visited.

On June 12, 2026, Laurie passed away peacefully at her home in Laguna Niguel, California, at the age of 75, following a courageous eight-year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by those who loved her most, her devoted husband, Jay, her son, Jason, and her daughter, Erin. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered by her family, friends, former students, and all whose lives she touched.

Those wishing to honor Laurie's memory are invited to make a donation
to the City of Hope in her name to support the ongoing fight against cancer.
