Kevin Phillips, Senior Director, Enterprise Organizational Effectiveness, HR Partnership for Strategy & Innovation at University of California, Irvine passed away on the 13th of April 2019 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Kevin led the Lean Six Sigma and Organizational Effectiveness teams supporting transformational change and building organizational excellence through people, process, and technology.

Kevin worked tirelessly in the healthcare industry for many years as a means of giving back to those who had offered him care on countless occasions. He built a strong reputation as a professional, a supportive colleague, a mentor, and a friend to all he encountered.

Under Kevin’s leadership, the organization and team experienced exceptional results as strategic partners in removing organizational barriers and driving change. He inspired many to be creative, think outside the box and push themselves to grow in their areas of strength. His team meant a lot to him, he cared about their personal and professional goals and went above and beyond to support them. Kevin was selflessly committed and loved what he did every day so much that he described it as his calling. His team remembers him for always providing great words of wisdom, advice and being a lifetime friend and mentor. Kevin always said that his best measure of success was seeing those who worked for him succeed.

Kevin’s passion and joy were his family, motorcycles and cars, running, spending time at the beach, his ministry and being a mentor to many. He was incredibly supportive of his daughters’ activities and of his wife – the love of his life, his best friend and partner, Marlett Phillips. Kevin met Marlett 30 years ago on the steps of a small church in Maryland. They married in 1991 in Kensington, Maryland. In 1997, they moved to San Clemente, California to reside by the beach they both fell in love with when they visited 10 years prior.

Kevin is survived by the family he loves so much: his wife and two daughters, Jana and Hannah, his large, loving extended family as well as a close-knit group of friends, and a caring church and school community.  Kevin and his family have been long-time parishioners of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church and members of St. Margaret’s Episcopal School community in San Juan Capistrano. Kevin also served on the Church Vestry and as a Eucharistic Minister. He served on the St. Margaret’s School Board of Trustees as the Church Vestry Representative from 2009 to 2015.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church. Our heartfelt thanks for all of the outpouring of love and support we have received from family, friends, and our church and school communities.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 6 at 10:00am at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church located at 31641 La Novia Avenue, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675. A reception will follow the service in the church courtyard.

Kevin was taken from this life way too soon, but his love remains.

The Way of Love

1If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

 8 Love never fails.

But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain:
