Obituary

Kenneth “Ken” Ray Martinez
1945-2015

Ken Martinez, 70, passed away on Wednesday October 14, 2015 in La Jolla, CA at Thornton Hospital surrounded by family.

He graduated from Point Loma High School with the class of 1963 where he lettered in Football and Baseball. As a standout athlete, he went on to play both sports at San Diego City College. In 1966 he married Patti, the love of his life, bought a small Spanish style house in Point Loma and began working at Kettenberg Marine. Finding his true calling as a salesman in the Furniture and Industrial Coating Industry with Frazee Paints, he brought his family to Lake Forest to pursue his career. He worked with several companies throughout his lifetime perfecting the ever changing coating technology and bringing it into Los Angeles and Orange County and eventually to Riverside and across the border into Mexico. Ken was always a leader in his territory, working hands on to train staff in spray technique and salesmanship until the day he retired. When the workday was done he could be found on the baseball field playing, coaching, watching or maybe just tossing a little BP. He loved his family, ocean fishing, his yard and his plumerias and the USC Trojans.

Ken is survived by his wife, Patti of 49 years; their daughter Ann Marie (Jeff) Wine and son Dr. Kenneth Martinez; two grandchildren, Tim Harvey and Kaiden Martinez; sister Alfreda “Fredi” Martinez; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

When I first learned of Ken’s passing, I was deeply saddened. One of my co-workers comforted me by saying, “I hope you know that Ken adored you.” My answer to that was, “Yes I do know that. That’s why I’m so sad.” It’s hard to lose your biggest fan! After some thought I have come to realize that is why Ken was so special, because I am not the only one who felt that way. Ken gave that gift of adoration to so many people. If he loved you, cared for you, or appreciated anything about you, you knew it. He did such an amazing job of connecting with people and forging meaningful relationships with so many different people in so many different ways. Ken was beloved because he was so generous with his spirit, his wisdom, his love, and his warm sense of humor.

In the days that have passed, I have found peace knowing that his relationships were all left COMPLETE. Every member of his family and circle of friends knew he loved them. I will be forever changed for the better by knowing him. Our friendship is a treasure to my heart.

I remain in awe of his ability to inspire his family to such greatness. I hope to learn from him and bless my family in the way that he has blessed yours. I pray for the comfort of your family in this time of great loss. Ken, Ann Marie, Tim & Kaiden – you have been loved and mentored by the best Dad/Papa ever! And Patti, God knows he loved you in a way that most women can only dream of. As Ann Marie put it in her eulogy. You only live once, but if you do it right, that’s enough.

The legacy of Ken Martinez lives on in glory. Thank God for creating such a wonderful human being to inspire us all!!

    Fight on!

With my deepest love and sympathy,
    Kris Vroom
