Obituary

A Celebration of Life and Memorial services for Kathlyne (Kathy) Wheeler will be held July 18, 2014 at 10 a.m., at the main campus of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA. Kathy slipped away peacefully and is now resting in her Savior’s arms.

Born in Germany, Kathy grew up in Texas and attended Texas Tech University, where she was initiated into Zeta Tau Alpha. When she transferred to Cal Poly University, Pomona, Kathy was instrumental in establishing Zeta as the first national Greek women’s organization on campus. She received both her B.B.S. and M.B.A. She married and moved to Casper, Wyoming where Kathy and her husband raised two sons. Kathy was an active member of First Christian Church, serving in several positions. She began a Zeta alumnae club bringing women together from across the state. She also assisted with the collegiate chapter at Colorado State University. Kathy worked part time with her husband as well as serving as Symphony Guild President. She took great joy in the many accomplishments of her two sons and always found time to enjoy their athletic pursuits.

The family moved to the Austin, Texas area in 1999. Kathy worked part time and began the role of caretaker for both of her parents. While there, Kathy also played the role of Clairee in the blockbuster theater production of Steel Magnolias, attended Lakeway Community Church, and affiliated with the local alumnae chapter of her sorority.

In 2007, Kathy and her family moved to South Orange County, CA and began enjoying the glorious weather, beaches, and attractions. She and her husband became members of Saddleback Church, where Kathy completed coursework to serve as a volunteer lay counselor. Kathy made many cherished friends and also loved spending time with her three Golden Retrievers.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Kenneth A. Wheeler; two sons: Charles A. Wheeler of Casper, WY and Bryan J. Wheeler of Coto De Caza, CA; daughter-in-law Rebecca L. Wheeler and two adorable grandchildren, Ally and Beau also of Casper, WY; a sister, Suzanne Reno of Arkansas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Joanne Wheeler of Cascade, ID; sister-in-law Doris Wheeler, of Brea, CA; and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Kathy was preceded in death by both parents and was laid to rest at the family plot in Texas, where multiple generations are interred.

In lieu of flowers, Kathy requested donations be made to your Ministry of choice at Saddleback Church; the Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles-Rescue (GRCGLAR); or the American Cancer Society.

  1. Dear Ken and family,

We were saddened to hear of Kathy’s passing. She was such a gentle, kind and brave woman and we feel honored to have known her. We just returned from a trip and had found ourselves looking around the airport for you two as we had been seeing each other so often on our trips here and there. Take care and know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely, Jennifer and Ted Grooms
