Kathleen Mavourneen "Neena" McHenry
May 27,1937 – January 11, 2023

Friends and family knew Kathleen as Neena or Grandma Neena.  She passed away peacefully in her sleep, just a few months shy of her 86 ^th birthday.

Neena was born to an Irish father, James Hamil Kelly and Italian mother, Sophie Elizabeth Banfe in Long Beach, CA on May 27 ^th , 1937.  She was an only child who quickly developed a love of the ocean and a global curiosity that prevailed throughout her life.  After graduating from Wilson High School in Long Beach, Neena spent part of her college education at University of the Americas in Mexico City, Mexico.  While obtaining her degree in Political Science she was able to interview Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, along with some classmates.  Neena also immersed herself in both on campus and off campus activities, including climbing Mexico's famous volcano, Popocatepetl.  Her love of the ocean continued into young adulthood as she would spend summer days bodysurfing with Bruce Brown of Endless Summer movie fame and Hobie.

She married Dermot Patrick McHenry at the age of 21 and they had three daughters, Michelle, Marisa and Maura.  Maura gave Neena the greatest gift; three beautiful grandchildren; Kelly, Meagan and Ethan.  All living in Southern and Central California, so family gatherings were plentiful, including a fun and memorable Holiday Season this past year in 2022.

Neena was devoted to her family and her faith.  In her late 40's, she went on a mission trip to Chiapas Mexico with priests and parishoners and delivered much needed medicine to the First Nation Peoples there.  Her faith grew even stronger over the years and she was seen most Sundays at her beloved, Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

Mom will always be remembered for having the BEST sense of humor which never waned even as the years passed.  She had a brilliant mind and loved to read, cook (she was a fabulous cook) and discuss politics and current events.   She will remain in our hearts forever.

A Catholic mass will be held for Neena on February 8 ^th at 11am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 27231 Aliso Viejo Pkwy, Aliso Viejo CA 92656.
