Obituary

On December 23, 2011, at the age of 87, Katherine “Kay” Harrell was granted her angel wings to God’s celestial shore. Her final days were spent at home surrounded by family and friends whom she loved dearly. Kay was a strong Christian woman who lived a life wrapped in the love of Jesus.

Kay was born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 26, 1924 to Katherine and George Miller. She was the oldest of 4 Children. She grew up in Wichita, moved to New Orleans where she married her husband James “Jimmy” Harrell on April 7, 1945. In Little Rock, Arkansas they were blessed with two amazing daughters, Georgia and Jamie. In 1966, Kay opened an antique store in Phoenix, Arizona and in 1969 moved to California where Kay continued running, The Doll Trunk, until her final days. Kay and Jimmy settled in Lake Forest, California in 1970. In 1982, Kay lost her best friend and husband. She stood strong and continued to love and support her family through her last days.

Kay is survived by her two daughters, Jamie Jones and Georgia Jones; Sister Mary Katzenstein; 5 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren. She will be missed greatly in all our lives, but we will meet again on God’s celestial shore.

  1. My Aunt Kay and Uncle Jim were always wonderful hosts when my family would visit them and and Georgia and Jamie in PHX. Uncle Jim took us all up to see touseiguit(sp) to visit the Indian clift dwellers.
Kay will always be remembered here on planet earth as sweet talking young wife and a wonderful mom to her girls. A delight to talk to.

  3. It is impossible for me to wrap up a lifetime of memories and love into a few typed lines. Growing up our mother always made my sister and I feel loved and safe and secure. Mom was a lot of fun. She made sure we had every opportunity- Sunday school, church camp, swim lessons, ballet, piano, ceramics, etc. Mom was a skilled semstress so Jamie and I were always decked out in beautiful home made dresses. That is until a well meaning but mistaken neighbor told her that I, as an 8th grader would undoubtedly prefer store bought clothes like all the rest of the girls.

Mom has always been my confidant. She has helped me through some serious problems life has thrown at our family – times when I wondered where God was in all of this crazy, often hard life we all live. She encouraged me to Trust God, to persevere, to do my best one day at a time.

On a lighter note. When I was heartbroken when told piano lessons would continue but ballet would not. She said “Georgia, when you are an old lady you can still play the piano but you probably wount be doing much ballet.” Thanks mom! Turns out I am still playing the piano and have taught it for 29 years!

I love you mom. Right now I can’t think of life without you.
But Praise God we will meet again.

    Love, Georgia Kay

  4. Kay was one of the most delightful persons we have ever met. She was always happy, smiling and helpful. We can honestly say there was never an unpleasant moment when we were around her. She will most certainly be missed by all, our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they grieve her passing and celebrate her life. Love to the family, Brice and Kathleen Paris
