Obituary

On December 23, 2011, at the age of 87, Katherine “Kay” Harrell was granted her angel wings to God’s celestial shore. Her final days were spent at home surrounded by family and friends whom she loved dearly. Kay was a strong Christian woman who lived a life wrapped in the love of Jesus.

She grew up in Wichita, moved to New Orleans where she married her husband James “Jimmy” Harrell on April 7, 1945. In Little Rock, Arkansas they were blessed with two amazing daughters, Georgia and Jamie. In 1966, Kay opened an antique store in Phoenix, Arizona and in 1969 moved to California where Kay continued running, The Doll Trunk, until her final days. Kay and Jimmy settled in Lake Forest, California in 1970. In 1982, Kay lost her best friend and husband. She stood strong and continued to love and support her family through her last days.

  1. Kay, as she was known to me, was a wonderful loving sister-in-law. Married to my older brother James or “Jimmy” as she preferred to call him was a welcome addition to our family. Our family attended their wedding in New Orleans where Jimmy was stationed while waiting to be discharged after serving in the Navy during WW II. I believed that she was the prettiest girl that I had ever met in my twelve years of observing young women. After the ceremony at a Justice of the Peace’s home, we went to a very swanky New Orleans restaurant by the name of La Louisiane in the French Quarter of the city. It was
a fine start to a healthy marriage that eventially brought them to California.

Kay was a wonderful hostess in her home for her family and all who entered their lives. After our son was stricken with cancer, Kay often called to inquire of his condition so the Bible Study Group that met in her home could direct their prayers for his recovery.

Kay added to my life prrecious memories that will remain active forever. Let this be a tribute to a wonderful friend who will be cherished in her absence from our daily lives.

Kay was a gracious Saint of a Lady!

I probably knew Kay as good as any of Pat’s relatives. The first memory I had of Kay was when I helped Pat and Jimmy move Jamie over to their house on Hurst. Later after getting out of the Navy in a tough economy they (Pat, Jamie and Kay) let me work at the shop refinishing antiques. It was where I got to know Kay and soon figured her out to be a kind and gracious woman. As an attempt to stay in touch I occasionally would pop in at the shop and visit, Kay would always greet me with a big smile and a big hug

God bless and I’ll be praying for you

    Thanks Katie

  5. Aunt Kay has and always will, have a special place in my heart. She was kind and loving. She was a great friend of my Mother, Shirley, as well as her big “Sis.” I always admired her humor and grace under any circumstance. She made me feel special just being around her. Even as the years passed I thought of her often and missed being close. She will missed but my life was so touched by her she will never be forgotten. Laurie Warren
