  1. We had a party and part of her gifts to the burti people was erasers but one was missing in each pack because Karen made earrings out of them

Karen had various jobs and made friends wherever she went..But what really made her happy was being with her friends, singing Karaoke or singing with a group, and lending her voice to lead a church or make a wedding truly special. She expressed her artistic nature in so many ways with her crafts, her creative jewelry, her ability to wrap a present better than anyone I know.

In October of Karen’s senior year, her family moved to Palos Verdes in Southern California. Karen started college at Harbor Junior College where made lifelong friends and she participated in the chorus even after completing her Associates degree. Karen also worked at Montgomery Wards as a department manager while she pursued an art degree at Long Beach State University. She later moved to Orange County.

I met Karen at Harbor College. We share the same birth month (JUULLLYYY) and that was one of many things that linked our friendship. Soon, our group grew into many friends including sisters Norah and Meg and others that morphed into the magic. We met at the library to study (remember this was the early to mid 1970’s) and then off to Marie Calendars for pie and a planning session for the next adventure. The beach in Hermosa became our home base in daylight hours. Looking for shells and spending hours at the bead shop. We were into any and every craft imaginable. Karen had the car with the matching detachable steering shell which never got old. We participated in the summer musical theater for several years. Since Karen had all the talent with her singing abilities we faithfully tried out for every on stage positions and every year year was relegated to the costume dept. We were the fine assistants to the lead queen of costumes, Connie. So we partied every night and had a blast. We all went on to CSU Long Beach for some serious schooling. I think we were all on the 8 year program to complete our 2 year junior college degree. But the fun ensued. We played cards every morning instead of taking early classes and shopped or went to Hamburger Henry’s for lunch thru dinner and then went back for an evening class. Good education. Karen and I joined the choir and performed a German Requim concert with 2 other choirs and full orchestra. I do believe this cemented Karen’s love of travel and musical theater. We gossiped, consoled each other on boyfriends, work, and our parents eye rolling at our adventures. Our jobs and adulthood that somehow slipped in and our path as friends whet separate ways. We still talked and were friends but life has its ways of taking over your individual path.

I was heart broken to hear of Karen’s passing. Such a beautiful bright flame was gone way too soon. But I do know that flame is still shining in heaven, upon all of us so special to have experienced her love and friendship. She is also continuing the things she was born to do in helping those who need a hug, a smile or a song. Or a Luis shell necklace.

I am a better person for being a friend of Karen.
