Obituary

Joyce Yvonne Rissling, 79, of Laguna Woods, California, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Easter morning April 12, 2020. She was born January 27, 1941 to parents Harold Hallmark and Jeanne Beaupréin Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Joyce graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach, CA in 1959 and received her B.S. in Medical Technology from Immaculate Heart College. Joyce is survived by Adolph, her husband of 52 years; her brothers Terry and Alan; her children Anita Grohmann (Jason), John (Trish), Anthony (Michelle), and Janna Mercado (Marcello); and her grandchildren Ondre, Dontae, Avery, Aiden, Gavin, Isaiah, Owen, Elizabeth & Myles.

She spent over 35 years of her career as a medical technician in the laboratory at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where she made lifelong friendships with the group she affectionately referred to as “The Golden Girls”. Joyce was very crafty and enjoyed scrapbooking, cake decorating and making pressed flower arrangements and greeting cards. She also loved to spend time with family and friends on summer trips to Lake Arrowhead, and family reunions in Canada.

Joyce loved the holidays, especially Christmas. The Rissling household went all out with decorations including artificial snow, “Merry Christmas” in dozens of languages, and a manger and nativity scene. She was also life-long Dodgers and Lakers fan.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point at a date and time to be determined.

  1. My sister Crista and I grew up across the street from the Rissling House and have so many memories of Joyce. I remember her making beautiful pressed flower arrangements, painting LARGE Christmas figurines for the front yard, and baking the most amazing cakes. Joyce baked some of our favorite birthday cakes growing up, especially Big Bird and Barbie! We shared many holidays together and we always felt like family. One of my favorite memories is when Joyce taught my sister to skip. Crista kept turning it into a gallop and couldn’t quite get it right. Joyce was laughing so hard ,as we all were but her laugh is what I remember most. She was patient, kind, and loving.

Joyce, you are missed and we love you!

  2. I am so sad to hear about Joyce I can only just imagine who her family feels. She left me with lots of special memories

  3. I am saddened to learn that my old and dear friend, Adolph Rissling, has lost his wife, the love of his life, after so many years. I met Adolph many years ago in Bismarck, North Dakota, through his Aunt & Uncle, Mary & Pius Halter, who were best of friends with my parents. The Halters dearly loved Adolph.
Please extend my sympathy and warm wishes to my friend Adolph.
Time marches on so fast but pleasant memories of nice people remain forever.
