Joyce Louise Brockett (Hamm)

Joyce Louise Brockett (Hamm) was a native of Southern California, born in 1924 and raised in Alhambra. Her early years were spent with her father and brother, Dick. At the age of 18 Joyce’s brother Joe was born bringing great joy into the family.

Joyce completed her nurse’s training with the US Cadet Nurse Corps at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Los Angeles in 1946. One day in 1944, while waiting for the trolley in Los Angeles and wearing her Cadet’s uniform, she caught the eye of a handsome young sailor on leave and he offered her a cookie. It was the beginning of 71 years of a loving partnership with Ed.

Joyce epitomized all that was good and positive in life. She and Ed shared these values with their children and their families. Charlie was the first, followed by Sue, Elaine (Lainie), Larry, Becky and Beth. Ed and Joyce welcomed niece Sharon into the family and gave her the love of a daughter, bringing their number to seven.

Joyce’s favorite family traditions included the annual Bake Day at Christmas time and celebrating the birthday parties that go along with having children, numerous grandchildren and countless great-grandchildren. As busy as she was, Joyce always found time to relax, to read, to play the piano, to sing and listen to music, and to visit with friends. She was always up for a game of Skip-Bo, especially with her grandchildren.

Although Ed and Joyce have traveled the world and have seen many spectacular sites, the beach was always her favorite spot. She loved the waves and the sunshine.

Never to be idle, Joyce always found time to volunteer in her community. She had volunteered as a Red Cross Nurse, as a volunteer at the ceramic slip casting studio in Leisure World and for the South County Outreach to name a few of her passions. She also crocheted caps for children with cancer. She was a member of the Aliso Canyon Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and served as Chapter Regent, as well as serving in other chapter board positions.

Everyone who knew Joyce knew her generous-loving spirit. A devout Christian, she was active in church activities throughout her life.
