Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Rybus passed peacefully on May 7, 2026, after fighting a 3.5-year battle with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. His daughter, Olivia, was by his side during his final week.

A USC graduate who grew up in Los Angeles, Joe lived more life than most people imagine possible. He spent his adult years in Orange County, where he raised his family and built a life defined by adventure and accomplishment. A CPA, real estate investor, and entrepreneur, Joe created a legacy of business acumen and vision.

A lifelong athlete, Joe completed 13 marathons, was an accomplished runner and cyclist, and summited Mount Everest. He was passionate about Drum Corps, particularly his years with the Kingsmen, and was a devoted USC Football fan who rarely missed a game. He traveled the world, pursued adventure with an unbridled spirit—bungee jumping, building businesses, and being the life of the party wherever he went. Those who knew him remember his magnetic personality, infectious social energy, and profound kindness. He touched countless hearts and left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Joe was a devoted father to his daughter, Olivia Rybus (age 25), and his twin sons, Sean Rybus and Clay Rybus (age 22). He believed deeply in their potential, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams. His legacy lives on through them—in their ambition, charm, entrepreneurial vision, and love of adventure.

During his final years, Joe was blessed to have his partner, Jennifer Smetaniuk, by his side. Her extraordinary compassion, unwavering love, and tender care sustained him through his greatest challenges. Her devotion was a testament to the profound connections Joe inspired throughout his life.

Joe's life was one of true fulfillment: adventure and accomplishment, challenge and triumph, love and connection. He is now at peace, reunited with his parents, Helen and Kenneth, cherished friends who preceded him, and the beloved family dog, Cody.

A celebration of Joe's life will be held in Newport Beach this summer, where he raised his family and spent most of his life. Details to follow.
