IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Henry
Hazelrigg
June 23, 1939 – January 6, 2024
John was born June 23, 1939 in Peru, IN to Henry and Margaret (Leffel) Hazelrigg.
John was raised on a farm in Indiana, raising sheep and tending crops. At the age of ten, John professed to serve God at the Mount Sterling (Illinois) convention, and remained true to that commitment for the rest of his life. John graduated from Deedsville High School in 1957, spent some time in California, then returned to Indiana, where he met and married Myra Hilligoss in 1960. John and Myra moved to California in 1962, where they raised three children, and John worked in real estate. John started work for Allstate in 1969, where he worked his way up in the company to a directorship at the home office in Northbrook, Illinois. John retired from Allstate in 1994, and John and Myra moved to Dana Point, where John became a Vice President at the Automobile Club of Southern California and helped form their life insurance division.
John was predeceased by son, John Scott, and grandson, Andre João (Portuguese equivalent for John). John is survived by his cherished wife, Myra, son Eric (Sandra), and daughter, Lisa (Thomas). John leaves a lasting legacy of nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many friends made along the way.
John won a lot of travel through business and loved to travel. John loved to reflect about his childhood in Indiana and growing up on a farm. John had a huge soft spot for all his dogs. John got his pilot’s license in the early 1970s and enjoyed taking his family flying, especially flying to Catalina Island for birthdays. John would enlist his young children to spot other traffic, a daunting responsibility for a 5-year-old that still traumatizes them today. John participated in several Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) tours and loved to recount his Midwest adventures. John loved classic cars and Harley Davidson motorcycles, offering and giving rides around Dana Point to friends and family.
After a long, progressive illness, John passed away peacefully in his sleep.
John was a faithful and honest husband, dad, grandpa, and friend who touched many lives. He will be greatly missed.
