I have three very distinct memories of Uncle John. Thanksgiving’s in Irvine – I’m sure we all remember those. There was also a day he took me on a ride in the red Lotus. We must have been driving 100MPH up what I think was Turtle Rock Drive, tires squealing the entire time. If anyone ever asks you with a grin whether you want to ride in their sports car, take it from me to respectfully decline. Uncle J you scared the lights out of me with that ride. Somewhat similarly, but much later – I must have been 18 years old, he invited me mountain bike riding with a group of his friends from work. I thought to myself I am in way better shape than these old-timers and took him up on his offer. We met out on the fire trails somewhere between Irvine and Laguna Beach. Like the Lotus ride this biking trip wasn’t for the faint of heart. It was probably 20 miles round trip with a thousand feet of elevation change. It was a lot of climbing followed by a 30MPH down hill run of a couple miles. I must have fallen four or more times and was completely bruised and bloodied by trip’s end. Great memories for sure – thank you Uncle J for being there when I was a kid.

Soooo many great memories over 40+ years. Hiking, biking, paddling, skiing, flying, mountains, deserts, Berlin (when wall was up), working, earthquakes, McCall. Too many stories to tell. It was great when John and Judy came to Alabama for my wedding in 1990. I am glad that John was part, a cherished and important part, of my live for so long. So long, old friend.
Nice service.
