Obituary

Joan Patricia Caulfield was born on April 27, 1950; she was raised in Rahway, New Jersey by her parents Thomas and Elizabeth along with 6 brothers and 3 sisters. She attended St Mary’s grammar school and Rahway High School. She graduated from Union County Tech in 1974 and began her career as a Registered Dental Hygienist. She practiced in New Jersey and California and worked with many well-known dentists. Joan retired from practicing dental hygiene in 2014 after 40 years; she took a strong interest in her patient’s and great pride in her profession.

Joan enjoyed living in the Balboa/Newport area, taking sailing lessons and joining the yacht club. Joan was a strong passionate and gifted woman. She enjoyed her large family and didn’t miss a chance to celebrate with them. Joan was a beloved sister and aunt. We loved her and will miss that Irish wit.

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
May the rain fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of His hands

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Wednesday March 18th at 10:00 at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church Newport Beach, CA.

  1. I worked with Joan for just about 10 years. I always loved hearing her when she would bring a new patient to her room, she would start off by telling them “I’m a lefty girl” or “I’m a Jersey girl”!! She also had some wonderful stories about her family from memories of train stations to her nieces & nephews. Your smile will be missed Jonie….till we meet again!! Buffy Heath RDA

  2. Joan worked as a hygienist in our office for over 11 years. Her patients loved her and she loved her patients. She loved to talk about her family and times in New Jersey. If someone told her they were from there she would always say “what exit”…….She brought alot of laughter into our office while remaining professional at the same time.God took her home way too soon….she will be missed!!!!! Joan worked side by side with me, as a dental hygienist for over a decade. She was a pioneer in our professional world, a real soldier for dentistry. She loved the weather here in Southern California, but she often spoke about New Jersey with fondness. I would always laugh when she would say to me, “Jersey girls don’t pump gas”! I feel her loss, and I miss her already. Chandra Shumar-Elam RDH

When I think of my youngest sister, Joan, the first word that comes to mind is independent. She was always so strong and full of life. As a child, I remember how happy she always was, and how much joy she brought to our lives. As an adult, I saw that same strength and independence guide her to success in her 40 year professional career.
Claire and I love you Joan and will keep you in our hearts always. May God hold you in his loving hands.
    Love,
    Ed & Claire

  5. Dear Joan, There are so many happy memories I have of you and the family having fun, especially down the shore. I remember you riding up and down the lagoon on Harold’s jet ski. It was such a nice day.

We will all miss you. Give Harold a hug for me. May you rest in peace. I love you!
