Obituary

Cowan, Jeanien Rickett – My daughter, my mother, our sister, and our friend left us to join God in heaven on Monday, October 20, 2008. It was a beautiful day on the Island of Catalina with blue skies – she was with the love of her life, she was with good friends, enjoying music and good spirit! Jeanien Cowan was born on March 25, 1952 to the late Edward Rickett and Lorraine Rickett of Minneapolis, Minnesota. As the oldest girl in a Catholic family of nine, she was the second mother to her siblings and the proud mother of her own daughter, Jennifer Nicole. She married and moved to Billings, Montana where she worked for one of the largest departments store as a buyer allowing her to develop a flare for fashion. She left Montana and moved to California in 1986 and continued her career as a market expert helping small boutiques develop inventory plans. She came from a family with an entrepreneurial spirit that was passed along from her father, which would later help her to develop her own successful business. She met and fell in love with Dr. Charles Cowan in 1999. One of her proudest accomplishments was the merging of these two families. Her favorite time of year was Christmas time when all them would come together. Jeanien and Charles loved to entertain at their home in Laguna Beach spending time with their extended family and friends. For those of us who knew and loved Jeanien, we share endless memories of her ability to unite her family with laughter, advice, and endless courses of mealtime celebrations. Words cannot describe our sense of loss, but we find comfort in the fact that Jeanien and Charles are together in heaven. She is survived by her mother, Lorraine Jordan Rickett of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; her grandson Carter Buck; her daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Brian Buck of Austin, Texas; step children Sherry and John Hanover and Bill and Supranee Cowan; grandchildren Jacob and Sydney Hanover. Her siblings: Glen and Sandra Rickett of Billings, Montana; Steven Rickett of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Gary and Becky Rickett of Tujunga, California; Ed and Delores Rickett of Cambridge, Minnesota; Cyndi and Gene Brookhart of Temecula, California; Shawn, Dan and Paula Rickett of Minnetonka, Minnesota; Laurie and Ron Bruneau of Fullerton, California; and eight nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the Women’s Rape and Crisis Center of Orange County with whom she volunteered for many years. The family will accept calls during a memorial to celebrate the lives of Jeanien and Charles Cowan on Sunday, October 26th at O’Connor Mortuary in Laguna Hill, California between the hours of 7 and 9pm. Funeral services will be on Monday, October 27th at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Laguna Beach at 11am.

  4. To all those who are grieving the loss of your beautiful Jeanien, there are never adequate words to say to stop a heart from hurting. But if I may I would like to leave a reflection of how Jeanien appeared in my eyes and what I will forever remember about her. I knew her and I loved her!
Jeanien was a gift! She was a gift to all who had the honor and pleasure of knowing her!
She was a gift who came down from the Father in Heaven and graced the lives of those who knew her. Her family and friends, and her darling husband, Charles.
Jeanien was a lovely flower who bloomed here for too short a time, but she has left behind a lovely fragrance that will linger forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
Jeanien waltzed into a room dancing to a secret tune which only she heard playing. It played, “You, you are a Shining Star! You are a Star! You know it! Now enter that room and the lives of those there, and be one!” And she did and she was! She was a Shining Star that lit up every room she entered.
I believe she lit up her Mother’s heart from the moment she was born and was loved so genuinely and deeply that she just sailed through this life with all confidence! She was so loved and wanted and filled to the brim with importance and self worth, that because of it… she knew who she was! She was the “golden” child to her parents; the one who could accomplish anything she set her heart and mind to…and she did!
She was a beautiful daughter, a sister, and she raised a beautiful daughter of her own! “Jennifer, she was a Mother to be proud of and she has left you a beautiful legacy of what being a Mother is all about. You have been so blessed!”
Jeanien was loved by so many of us, and then…cherished by her husband Charles. He not only loved her, he affirmed her. He appreciated her. He valued her beyond all else and she grew even more beautiful and serene because of it!
Jeanien and Charles lived a wondrous life of love together so tightly joined it was as if the two really were ONE, not only in spirit but in the fabric of all they were made of. So intwined and interwoven that they could not be separated. They were deeply in love and united in marriage and it is somehow fitting that they were united in death…for to be apart, they would each be lost.
But they are not lost, thank God.
They are only separated from us, for a time, but they are Together in Heaven for always! Together they will forever be closely wrapped in their shining cloaks of adoration for one another. Their love will live on! They are joined in love to the Father of love..their Holy God!
    They are home!
I am so deeply sorry for your loss and I will continue to pray for you!
