Obituary

JEAN A. MAYO

Jean A. Mayo passed away on August 5, 2015. Jean was born in Boston, MA on October 31, 1914. The daughter of Italian immigrants, Jean was the middle child of five. She had two older sisters and two young brothers.

From an early age she worked. She had a curious and adventurous spirit. She loved people and loved to be active. She married and had children and in 1943 moved to California with her family. Jean eventually moved to Las Vegas where she worked as a hostess at the Rivera. This is just one of the many jobs she had over the years. After moving back to California, she opened a restaurant (Jads), she worked at Allergan, she worked at PCA where she had the opportunity to travel often, she was a stockbrocker for a period of time, and she worked at the Hollywood track in the Turf Club. Jean would retire…and then get another job. She loved to contribute and did so in many ways.

For most of her life, she was also active at Our Lady Queen of Angels in Newport Beach. She prepared the flowers for Mass and worked in the kitchen, helping out with various ministries. She went to daily mass, and when she could no longer drive, she would take the Access bus or be picked up by friends. She was also a volunteer for other organizations, most notably Casa Teresa. She was on the Board for a period of time and continued to support them until her death.

Jean was a remarkable mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She taught most of us gin rummy and rummy tiles, and beat us all at it for most of her life. She made an awesome lemon meringue pie and always wore heels. She had the most contagious and joyous laugh we’ve ever heard. She loved life and was an example to us of hard work, volunteerism and living a purposeful life.

We will miss her presence, her laughter and her adventurous spirit. She truly lived life to the fullest. Jean is survived by 3 children (Lenore Carni, Rita Pipta (Robert), and Marilyn Doherty), 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her memory to Casa Teresa at www.casateresa.com.
