Obituary

JEAN MARIE NEWELL

Jean Marie Newell was born in Highland Park, Illinois, and lived there until she was 16, when her family moved to Southern California. She met Michael Newell on New Year’s Eve at a Rose parade in Pasadena in 1966. They dated, and Jean converted to Catholicism before she married Mike at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Pasadena. They had two children, Scot Michael and Jenny Anne.

They moved to Michigan when Mike was transferred from Pasadena to Michigan in 1977, and then back to Southern California, where they bought a home in Lake Forest, and that is still their home.

Jean didn’t have an outside job, but was a stay at home mom, as family was very important to her. She was a great wife to Mike, and mother to Scot and Jenny. She volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop once or twice a week until that store burned down.

Jean helped to count the St. Nicholas collection money with her friends from Church on Monday mornings. She became ill, but always kept a positive attitude. After many years, her disease caused her so much pain that she had to give up that position.

She kept in touch with friends and family every day at home though, through social media, and that brought her joy in her final years.

Jean loved to crochet, and collected angels. Her favorite color was yellow, and that’s why you’ll see that in her flowers today.

She passed away on January 6th at the age of 73.

In 2003 Jean wrote this inscription on a daily calendar she gave to me. “Dearest Mary, Not only are you my wonderful and special sister-in-law, but you are my wonderful friend. I treasure your friendship. Most of all I treasure YOU!! My love, Jean”

It has had a place in my bathroom ever since then, and never does a day go by when I turn the page that I haven’t thought of Jean. Yes, my sister-in-law was a very special lady, and I will miss her.
