   The Elders

   The Elders are leaving
   One by one their limousines pull up
   Pancreatic Cancer, Heart Attack, Stroke
   And for some just plain Weariness

   My friend says she is an
   Apprentice, an “Elder in Training”
   I, for one, do not feel in the least prepared
   To be the rock I have found in them

   I look to the Elders
   To hold the vision of a better,
   Future me, one who moves from Me and Mine to
   We and Ours, a rare and precious state

   As they slam the black doors
   And settle into soft leather seats
   I am remembering their words of wisdom
   “There isn’t anyone else out there”
