Obituary
Jay Otto passed away on March 29, Thursday evening in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family- Father Jim and Mother Bette Otto and sister Christine Otto. Jay leaves behind a wife Barbie Otto, and four sons Jay Jr., Noah, Tyler and Daniel.
Jay was the VP of Technical Services for Zumasys Inc. He will be greatly missed by his customers, vendors and just about everybody who came in contact with him.
Jay was also a Volunteer ski patroller for 23 years for Snow Summit. His dedication was recognized with numerous awards including a National Appointment, which is the National Ski Patrol’s most prestigious award.
Jay fought a nearly 18-month battle with Melanoma. He was courageous to the end and remained a constant source of inspiration to us all. Jay’s calm, steady personality was a source of comfort to his family, friends, and co-workers.
Services will be held at Saddleback Church on April 5th. His ashes will later be scattered by the family at some of Jay’s Favorite places.

As you may know Jay Otto has been a valued member of the Zumasys family since our inception, providing exceptional support to you and more than 1,000 other business professionals. What you may not be aware of is that Jay has been on medical leave for 18 months battling a very serious recurrence of Melanoma.
, Jay has had more ups and downs in the last 18 months than most of us will experience in a lifetime and, as you know from working with him, Jay is probably one of the most positive people you have ever met. However, he needs our encouragement now.

The purpose of this email is to bring you up to speed on Jay’s situation and to request your support in his time of need.

Jay Otto first came into our lives in May of 1992 when he was a college student doing technical consulting for his former high school where Joe Cupp Zumasys partner was a coach and teacher. By December of 1995 Joe’s other pursuit, Orion Pacific Technologies, had grown to a point where additional technical resources were required. Joe did not hesitate to recruit Jay. At Orion Pacific Jay proved a quick study and rapidly excelled at supporting the Pick/D3 product set. When JBS acquired Orion Pacific in 1997, Jay became the lead D3 NT technician in the company and continued to work out of JBS’ California office. In September of 2000, this division of JBS became Zumasys, Inc.ÃÅ

In the beginning, Zumasys was located in a small 700 sq ft office space in downtown San Clemente, CA. We were fresh in business, there were just two of us, and we had big aspirations. There was just one resource we could not live without: Jay Otto.

Out of the gate, Jay played a pivotal role in Zumasys’ success working countless evenings and weekends. Jay developed the original Zumasys logo, he setup our first phone system, created the website and much, much more. Jay also became the highest ranking Citrix certified professional in the company and in 2001 he was named the first “Zumasys Employee of the Year.” In September of 2003 Jay was promoted to VP Professional Services, a position he held until his medical leave of absence began as he went out for surgery in September 2005.

In November 2005, Jay was married to Barbie Carlson another former Zumasys employee and he became a father to three fine young boys. Jay has taken to fatherhood nicely to say the least and together Barbie and Jay are raising a wonderful family. In 2006 Barbie and Jay proudly announced the arrival Jay Jr., Jay’s first son who will be one year old this summer.

“We need to let our friends and loved ones know that Jay’s condition has worsened and as a result he has been transitioned to Hospice Care, here at home. We still believe in miracles and that God can heal him. We are not giving up our hopes but we are praying that Jay will not have to suffer for a prolonged period as his condition worsens.”

“One more thing, Jay and I are creating a story of Jay’s life. It is very important to Jay that his little boy know his dad, and Jay will have a hard time just telling his story. I know this might be hard to do but please take a moment and write something about Jay, a special memory – if you have pictures of the event, that would be awesome. I am greatly saddened to have to share this news with our extended Patrol family. Jay Otto has made his peace with his Lord and Savior, his family, and his friends. He has moved on to a better quality of life. Those of us that worked with Jay, skied with Jay, laughed with Jay, and cried with Jay will miss his physical presence. I hope and pray our mental remembrance, will remain as strong as his will to fight the nasty disease which took his life away from all of us.
Jay joined patrol in the 1983/1984 season. He completed his Instructor Development in1992 and became an OEC Instructor the same year. Jay assisted at many of the local OEC courses in the So Cal Region for many years, instructing, coaching and evaluating. In 1997/1998 he was the BBVNSP Outstanding Male Alpine Patroller. He acquired this award again in 2000/2001. This same year he received the award for Most Incidents Handled with 36. Jay served as a trainer of the patrol guidelines for First Year Patrollers. He taught first aid, skiing, and toboggan skills to these FYP’s for many seasons. Jay had a positive and patient way of helping those he instructed stretch themselves to achieve more than they sometimes believed they could. When asked if he thought they could accomplish what he set out for them to do, he would say “I don’t see why not.”ÃÅ
2001/2002 Jay was named the Orlyn Jones FYP Trainer of the Year and also received the BBVNSP award for Most Patrol Days. Jay expanded his training in 2003 and completed his Level I Avalanche as well as his MTR I.ÃÅ He finished his Senior Ski Patroller status this year then helped instruct and evaluate at Senior OEC/SEM clinics. 2003/2004 season Jay received the Outstanding Male Senior Patroller. Jay was busy in 2005, he completed a Ski Trainers Workshop and more awards came his direction. He received the Orlyn Jones Award again for the Outstand Alpine FYP Trainer, The Ken Quirk Award for Commitment to Excellence in Ski Patrolling, and Jay also received one of the highest NSP awards given to its members, a National Appointment with #10272.
Jay was also instrumental behind the scenes with the administration of our data base. For many years he input schedules into the data base, organized the roster for distribution, and helped finalize the season schedule for distribution.ÃÅ Jay also served at the ski area as a hill lead supervisor. He provided a high level of dignity and strength in leadership.ÃÅ Jay was a loyal and dedicated member of our Patrol family, a quiet but strong role model of excellence in skiing and first aid, and a true friend.
ÃÅ We on patrol will always have a special place in our hearts and admire his personal character as he went though the various stages over the last few months. I would like to personally extend from the Big Bear Valley NSP our deepest sympathies to Barbie Daniel Tyler Noah and JJ,ÃÅ Jim and Betty,ÃÅ Christine and Alex,ÃÅ and the extended Otto family. Our thoughts, prayers, and support will be with them in the hours, days and months ahead.

I used to deliver to Zumasys in San Clemente and the best part of my morning was talking to Jay and Joe. Jay was always upbeat and never had a bad day. To Jay’s family, I am sorry for your loss.
