Obituary

James W. Naumann Jr., 86, of Mission Viejo, California, beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother and uncle died peacefully at home on August 20, 2013 from complications of COPD. He was born on December 7, 1926 in Manchester, New Hampshire to James W. Naumann Sr. and Mary Margaret (McGinity) Naumann.

Jim grew up in Binghamton and Buffalo, New York and had many fond memories of the family summering in Jamestown, NY. His family moved to San Diego, California where he graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1944. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps proudly serving in the South Pacific for the remainder of World War II.

Following the war he settled in Los Angeles and began a 45 year career in the construction industry as a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters. He married Betty (Bet) Jean Juden on July 2, 1949. In 1950, as a member of the Marine Reserves, he was called to active duty to serve in the Korean War. Leaving his wife and baby daughter behind, he bravely fought in the Inchon Invasion and the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir.

On his return from Korea, Jim continued his trade as a plumber in the Santa Monica, California Local 545. He served the union as Business Agent and Business Manager of the Local as well as president of the Southern California Pipe Trades District Council 16.

Nothing gave Jim as much joy as traveling with Bet in the string of motor homes they owned through the years. They explored much of the US & Canada delighting in time spent with family and friends. Jim was active in the Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Orange County Chosin Few Chapter, Elks Club, Knights of Columbus and a leader in the Society of St. Vincent De Paul at Santiago de Compostela Parish in Lake Forest. In retirement he became a skilled painter, woodworker and an occasionally successful golfer.

Naumann; sister-in-law Sue Naumann of Mission Viejo; dear friend Helen Patterson as well as many other family members, friends and his faithful dog “Barney.” Jim was predeceased by his loving wife Betty in 2002; brother Richard Naumann of Mission Viejo; brother Robert Naumann of Hemet; nephew Thomas A Naumann; niece Margaret (Naumann) Thorpe.

my uncle Jim was the scariest man I ever knew…but also the funniest…(when I got older)…haha, he always fell asleep our house…

  2. Jim was one of the first people to welcome me when I started attending Santiago de Compostela and his kindness and friendship was one of the reasons I stayed. God Bless Jim and my deepest condolences to the family.

  3. We will never forget uncle Jim when we moved to Westchester, Ca. We were a young family and Gayle and Michael always wanted to stop by and see uncle Jim and Betty. They looked up to young Jim and Kasey. They were our only relatives on the west coast. Uncle Jim always made us welcome. God bless and take of Uncle Jim. We miss you!

  4. You had an impact on our life at Santiago de Compostela Catholic Church?. We first met when I was in a wheelchair, parked right alongside you during the 8am mass on Sunday’s. Since then, my husband and I attended 8am mass because we looked forward to your short conversations. We sat by you during mass so we can exchange PEACE. After a short while; we learned more about each other, families and we became friends. You watched our baby grow from a 3week old to 9 months and always said how strong he is and good he is in church. We learned about how you served our country in the Korean War and fought in the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. Even though your car may not be parked in the same spot every Sunday morning, your wheelchair may not be in the last pew, and we can not have our brief conversations we know that you will be present with us… not only during 8am mass but within our hearts. RIP Jim.

  5. I am sorry for your loss.

I was one of the female plumbers that were accepted into local 545 in the late 70’s, due to Affirmative Action. Most of the guys were threatened and would test the females and minorities at every step of the way.

Jim was extremely supportive of me and I always felt that I had someone in my corner. He encouraged me all the time, and even assigned me as union stewart on one of the jobs. He was a mentor and I will always respect him for going against the grain and remaining a kind and caring gentleman.
