Obituary

James John Maffetore

James John Maffetore, 91, of San Juan Capistrano passed away on October 16, 2023. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11am on Tuesday, November 14 at Mission Basilica, San Juan Capistrano.

James was born to James and Mary (Pisano) Maffetore on July 2, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY. He was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School before being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge in 1956, he worked in medical sales and became a certified x-ray technician. In 1966, through a mutual friend, he met the love of his life Cheryl San Miguel and they were married on December 21, 1968.

James worked in the medical field for over 40 years, always wanting to help others. He will be remembered for many things, including his love for classic cars, photography, Frank Sinatra (for which they shared the nickname of “ol’ blue eyes”) and playing his favorite 1,3,5 parley at the horse track. He was a passionate NY Yankees fan his whole life, loved going to Costco for “just one thing” and spending time at Dana Point Harbor. Adored by his grandchildren, he was known simply as Papa. On most Saturdays, you could find Papa cheering on his grandchildren playing soccer, baseball or at their school performances. However, it was his love for holidays (especially Christmas) and celebrating birthdays with a cake from Ralphs that will be missed most.

James is survived by his three children and spouses: David, Todd and Laura Rice; six grandchildren: Dakota, Brooke, Henry, Clare, Ella and Wesley. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Mary Maffetore, sister Gloria Bravada and beloved wife Cheryl.
