Obituary

Iwona Wanda Meyer

Iwona Wanda Meyer of San Juan Capistrano, California, peacefully passed away on May 25th, 2020, with her family at her side.

She was born in Warsaw, Poland and was a fine arts student at the University in Warsaw. While there, she contributed her many talents to the reconstruction of churches in the old city of Warsaw after WWII. During the war, she was involved in the Polish underground and gave aid to the wounded.

In 1965, she emigrated to the United States with her mother Wanda Szemplinska and her two children Yvonna and Mike.

Iwona was a fond lover of all animals and found great pleasure in training German Shepherds for the blind. While back in Warsaw, she was president of the Polish Kennel Club. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining for all of her family and friends, especially during heartfelt celebrations and holidays. Her love for desserts will always remind us of her.

Iwona was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, George Clifford Meyer. Originally from New York, George came to Los Angeles on a contract offered by NBC Studios in Burbank. His talent was camera operation and he went on to win many accolades including a lifetime achievement award from the Society of Camera Operators in 1994.

Iwona and George shared a life of love, joy and adventure. It was only one week after George met Iwona that he swept her off of her feet and they were married. Throughout their lives, Las Vegas held a special place in both of their hearts and they frequently vacationed there. They were soulmates from the beginning and welcomed all to enjoy delicious food, gracious hospitality and much laughter. Everyone always looked forward to spending time in their company.

Iwona is survived by her daughter Yvonna Korbonski, son and daughter-in-law Mike and Janine Nalewajski, granddaughter Nicole Nalewajski and great grandson Nathan Nalewajski. She will be greatly missed by Stephanie Elchuck.

  1. Holly Korbonski –I’m so sorry that you lost your mom…I’m wondering if by any chance we are related? Korbonski is a really unusual name so I’m taking a chance in reaching out here. Take care…
