Obituary

Irene M. Apps died on Sunday, 29 January 2023. Irene Malfregeot was born March 21, 1924 in New Martinsville, WVA.

Irene’s parents moved to Syracuse, NY where she attended Nottingham High School. Upon graduation she attended Southern Seminary in WVA earning her college degree. Irene returned to Syracuse, NY where she married Richard P. Apps on 9 August 1947 and had three children. Richard P. Apps Jr. (wife Pamela), Nancie L. Apps (Victor Hernandez, husband deceased), Susan I. Walker (husband Jack). She was a loving and devoted wife and mother.

Irene was an extraordinary Grandmother and Great-grandmother, called Meme. She has seven grandchildren. Chelsea Matheiu, William Apps, Shannon Law, Jeremy Walker, Aaron Apps (dec), Giorgio Hernandez and Dominic Hernandez. She also has six great granddaughters, Makenna, Riley, Dawn, Lennon, Willa and Dawson.

Irene aside from being a wonderful Mother and Meme was an avid Syracuse University football fan and was a member of a tailgate group who were all great friends for many years. Irene played and loved golf, often with her best friend Phyllis and several leagues. She continued to play into her early 90’s.

Irene and Dick traveled across country to California or to Florida each winter to be with their children and grandchildren building loving relationships that will last all our lives.

Irene also enjoyed many surprise celebrations hosted by her family and friends and will be remembered as the light in the room.

In 2018 Irene and Dick moved to San Juan Capistrano, CA to enjoy and be closer to family as they lived into their very late 90s. Irene said goodbye to her love, Dick Apps, September of 2020 after a 73-yr. marriage. Irene loved the Lord and was an Episcopalian. Now she is a member of the Church Triumphant. We her family and friends are sure the Celestial Choir was singing, “Here she comes just a walking down the street, singing, Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do” (by Manfred Mann). This became her theme song on her 80th birthday compliments of her tailgate friends. Irene will be greatly missed but we know in our hearts she “loved us more”.
